According to HK01, Ms. Lac Di Linh - senior manager of TVB - the organizer of the Miss Hong Kong 2023 contest, said that the quality of contestants this year is higher than previous years, many beauties with all the factors of appearance, talent, and education came to participate.
One of the reasons that helps improve the quality of candidates is the criterion that a candidate must have someone related to the culture and arts industry to recommend them in order to be eligible to compete for the beauty queen title.
Miss Hong Kong 2023 contestants in the preliminary round
This is a good sign as Miss Hong Kong has been causing frustration for many years due to the declining quality of contestants.
However, before the semi-final night took place, the competition faced an incident when a series of outstanding contestants suddenly withdrew from the competition such as: Trinh Vinh Quan, Ly Tu Thanh, Nora, Ton Y... The reason these beauties gave was because they were "discouraged" by TVB's strict contract terms.
On HK01, Sun Yi said she hesitated and wondered when she saw TVB's 100-page contract. If she made it to the finals, regardless of whether she won the award or not, she would still have to sign an exclusive 5-year contract with TVB.
During this time, she is not allowed to participate in any outside entertainment activities. Those who do not make it to the finals are also restricted from appearing in showbiz for half a year.
"TVB's contract is too binding. This does not fit my development plan," Ton Y shared.
Ton Y is a prominent face in this year's contest. She competed in Miss Asia 2021 organized by ATV and won the Miss Photogenic award.
Similarly, contestants Nora (24 years old) and Cheng Wing-Kun (24 years old) also shared the reason for withdrawing because they did not want to "gamble" with TVB's strict contract terms.
"My original intention was to compete to challenge myself. I was doing well as a teacher. I also didn't know how far I would go in Miss Hong Kong. Giving up a stable job to gamble on my future put a lot of pressure on me. After thinking for a while, I decided not to take the risk," Nora said.
Trinh Vinh Quan expressed: "I am working full-time, with a relatively high income. I feel my future is too uncertain after signing a contract with TVB. Will I still be able to keep my current job after the competition? TVB gave me the opportunity to show myself, I am very grateful to the station, but the problem of making a living has forced me to stop competing."
Faced with the turning away of some prominent candidates, the Organizing Committee has not yet given an official response.
Nora is considered one of the most beautiful contestants of Miss Hong Kong 2023.
Miss Hong Kong was first held in 1973, many faces were discovered after this contest such as: Maggie Cheung, Lee Ka-Hyun, Anita Yuen, Kwok Ai-Ming, Chung So-Hung, Kwok Kha-Ying, Tsui Tzu-San, Myolie Wu... The current Miss is the beauty Lam Cheuk-Ki.
However, in recent years, the quality of the contest has been criticized as declining, many crowned beauties do not stand out, and few contestants have made an impression in their careers.
