2024 is a very successful year

The 8th Victory Cup Gala 2024 recently took place in Hanoi to especially honor sports talents with great contributions following the Oscar model, in which the owners of the 2 most notable Victory Cups were male and female athletes of the year Tran Quyet Chien ( billiards ) and Trinh Thu Vinh (shooting).

Billiard player Tran Quyet Chien attracted attention in the category of male athlete of the year. He is the first representative of billiards to be nominated in the top 3, thanks to his spectacular achievements in the international arena.

Quyet Chien's opponents include badminton player Le Duc Phat, shooter Pham Quang Huy, chess player Le Tuan Minh, gymnastics talent Nguyen Van Khanh Phong, archer Le Quoc Phong, marathon star Hoang Nguyen Thanh and weightlifter Lai Gia Thanh.

As predicted by experts and fans, Tran Quyet Chien was honored with the male athlete of the year award at the 2024 Victory Cup. This is a well-deserved award for the player born in 1983.

Tran Quyet Chien made many impressions in 2024.

Tran Quyet Chien started 2024 perfectly with the championship at the World Cup Bogota, then won another World Cup title in Veghel. He also won the 2024 World Carom 3-Cushion Team Championship, when accompanying Bao Phuong Vinh.

In the 7 stages of the 2024 World Cup, Quyet Chien entered the top 8 in 2 other events. In addition to the prestigious Cups, 2024 marked Tran Quyet Chien's official rise to the world No. 1 position in both rankings of the World Carom Federation (UMB), namely the World Players Ranking (counting national and continental achievements) and the UMB Events Ranking (counting only World Cup and World Championship achievements).

Previously in the history of Vietnamese sports, only shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh had done this with two world number 1 rankings in 2014 and 2016.

Those successes made Tran Quyet Chien the first Vietnamese player to reach the world No. 1 ranking in June 2024. In December 2024, it was a pity for Quyet Chien that despite having the same score as Dick Jaspers, he ranked No. 2 in the world.

Back to number 1

"Although billiards is not yet an Olympic sport, when we can achieve great results, we can compete and compare with other Olympic sports," Tran Quyet Chien shared.

Regarding his plans for 2025, Quyet Chien said he will return to Bogota in February to defend his World Cup title in Colombia, then embark on a journey to defend his title at the 3-cushion carom team world championship.

"I focus on my goals, getting the best results to be able to return to the world number 1 position," said the player born in 1983.

Quyet Chien is determined to return to the world number 1 position.

Tran Quyet Chien was born in Ha Tinh, but grew up in Ca Mau and then settled in Ho Chi Minh City. His love for billiards came when his parents bought a billiard table to earn extra income. From then on, the Ha Tinh native also became a "table owner".

When moving to Saigon, Quyet Chien had to drop out of school at Ton Duc Thang University to help support his family. He worked many jobs such as a waiter at a bar, a worker, a billiard club employee, etc.

At the age of 22, Tran Quyet Chien worked as a waiter in a club in Ho Chi Minh City and started playing 3-cushion Carom. With his natural talent for billiards and his efforts to learn and explore, he gradually realized that 3-cushion Carom was a great passion that he must pursue to the end.
