Le Thi Anh Thu is gradually reaching her dream, but perhaps the road ahead is still full of thorns when the burden of tuition and living expenses is still heavy.

Talking to us, the eyes of poor student Le Thi Anh Thu (20 years old, from Lap Vo district, Dong Thap province), currently a second-year nursing student at Can Tho Medical College, were filled with worries about tuition fees and money to support her younger siblings studying in the countryside.

Almost only wear old clothes

The more difficult it is, the more her will to overcome difficulties and study becomes "sharpened". Anh Thu has excellent academic achievements. In addition, this little girl from Dong Thap also works hard to help sell drinks at a cafe. "I try to save money for school. As for clothes, shoes... I only buy new ones when they are very old, as long as they look clean and neat," Anh Thu said, comforting herself. "My parents always taught me to study hard to change my life. No matter how hard it is, my parents still try to take care of my four siblings' education, so that we can have a future to take care of ourselves," Anh Thu said.

Study to change your life

Anh Thu is the eldest in a family of 3 younger sisters. Ms. Huynh Thi Thuy (48 years old, Anh Thu's mother) has suffered from high blood pressure for many years. 3 months ago, this mother also had to have kidney stone surgery, currently her ability to work is limited. Le Thi Anh Thu's family is a poor household in the locality. Almost all household expenses depend on the money earned from farming by Mr. Le Phat Huy (48 years old, Anh Thu's father). The income is about a few million VND/month, saving a lot but still not enough.

Mr. Huy said that his family's income mainly depends on seasonal rice farming on the land given to him by his parents. When rice crops have a good harvest, the price drops and vice versa. Sometimes, when the old rice is exchanged for new rice, after deducting all the costs of fertilizer and labor, leaving a little rice to grind rice for home consumption, the profit is about 2 million VND/acre of rice field. "Recently, I was lucky to have a good harvest and good prices, so I was very happy, having a little more money for the children to go to school. Then, whenever someone in the neighborhood hired me to do something, I saved up every penny to help," Mr. Huy said. "Seeing that the children are so eager to study, my wife and I also tried hard to raise four children to study properly. Hopefully in the future, the children will have stable jobs to take care of themselves," Mr. Huy said. Master Nguyen Thi Mai - lecturer at Can Tho Medical College, Anh Thu's academic advisor - said that Anh Thu is one of the few students with difficult circumstances but strong will to overcome difficulties, is a typical student with excellent academic achievements and receives a scholarship from the school. She is very polite and diligent in learning, seeking knowledge, and actively participates in class movements.
