National competition on science and technology will be held in Ho Chi Minh City

(NLDO)- In 2025, the Science and Technology Competition will be held for the first time under new regulations. The participating units are the Department of Education and Training in each locality.


The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has just officially announced the National Science and Technology Competition for high school students.

This year, the contest was held in Ho Chi Minh City, organized by the Ministry of Education and Training in coordination with the People's Committee and the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City for 3 days: March 19, 20, 21.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the National Science and Technology Competition for High School Students is organized to encourage high school students to conduct scientific research, apply knowledge to solve practical problems in life; create opportunities for high school students to introduce scientific research results; enhance cultural and educational exchanges between localities and international integration.

The competition links students' scientific research activities with innovation in teaching methods and forms, innovation in methods and forms of assessing students' learning outcomes, contributing to the development of students' qualities and abilities. At the same time, it also forms scientific style, professional ability and entrepreneurial potential for high school students, contributing to the implementation of career education and orientation of student streaming in general education.

In the 2024-2025 school year, the competition has the participation of 62/63 Departments of Education and Training and 12 units of universities, colleges, institutes, and research institutes with high schools; high schools under the Ministry and ministerial-level agencies.

This year, the competition had a total of 212 projects, including 23 individual projects, 189 group projects; 190 projects by high school students and 22 projects by middle school students. A total of 401 students participated, including 358 high school students and 43 middle school students.

This year's competition projects are in 22 fields including: Animal Science, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Biochemistry, Biomedical and Health Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Embedded Systems, Chemical Energy, Physical Energy, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, Plant Science, Robotics and Intelligent Machines, Systems Software, Translational Medicine.

The Vietnamese delegation won a second prize in the field of system software at the 2024 International Science and Technology Competition.

Also according to the Ministry of Education and Training, in 2025, the Science and Technology Competition will be held for the first time according to the provisions of Circular 06/2024. Accordingly, the participating units are the Department of Education and Training, each participating unit can register a maximum of 3 projects; the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, each unit can register a maximum of 6 projects. The unit hosting the competition can register a maximum of 6 projects. The hosting units of the competition are the Department of Education and Training of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, each unit can register a maximum of 12 projects. Thus, this year, Ho Chi Minh City can register 12 projects.

Projects participating in the competition are selected from provincial and school level competitions. According to reports from participating units, every year there are 200-300 projects participating in the preliminary round to be selected to participate in the final round of the provincial competition, on that basis, projects are selected to participate in the national competition with the number of projects according to the annual regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

From the competition results, the Ministry of Education and Training will select the projects that win the highest prizes and are qualified to participate in the International Science and Technology Competition for high school students scheduled to take place in May 2025 in the US.

Resounding achievements of Ho Chi Minh City students at international science and technology arena

The International Science and Engineering Fair for Secondary School Students (ISEF) is an annual competition that has been held since 1952. To date, ISEF is the largest international science and engineering competition for secondary school students from grades 8 to 12. Each year, approximately 1,800 secondary school students from approximately 80 countries and territories around the world participate in presenting research results in 21 areas of the competition.

Participating in the 2024 competition, the Vietnamese student delegation won a second prize in the field of system software. That was the project of Nguyen Le Quoc Bao and Le Tuan Hy, 12th grade students at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City. The project of these two students also received a fourth prize (Special Awards) awarded by the American Association for Information Technology. This is the first time Vietnam has won a second prize in 12 years since the National Science and Technology Competition was held nationwide and participated in the International Science and Technology Competition from 2013 to present.
