Last November, Pyongyang successfully launched its first spy satellite into orbit after two failed attempts. The US and its allies said the launches violated UN Security Council resolutions.

Below is a timeline of North Korea's space program, satellite launches and missile technology development.

August 31, 1998: North Korea launches its space program by launching the Kwangmyongsong-1 satellite on a Paektusan rocket from the Tonghae Satellite Launching Station. Pyongyang claims the test was a success, but U.S. officials say the test failed over the Pacific Ocean.

April 5, 2009: Then-North Korean leader Kim Jong Il oversees the launch of the Kwangmyongsong-2 satellite from the Tonghae complex, but the launch fails and falls into the ocean. State media reports that 14 North Korean soldiers were killed in the launch.

April 13, 2012: Kwangmyongsong-3 satellite is launched from the newly completed Sohae Satellite Launching Station in the western region. Foreign press is invited to observe the launch, but once again it is unsuccessful.

December 12, 2012: North Korea successfully launches the second version of the Kwangmyongsong-3, placing an object into orbit. Although North Korea claims the object is an observation satellite, it is widely believed that the object does not carry a transmission system.

April 2013: North Korea establishes the National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) to pursue peaceful space exploration.

June 23, 2016: North Korea announced the successful test of an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), with a range of 3,200 - 5,400 km.

August 24, 2016: Mr. Hyon Kwang Il, director of scientific research at NADA, said "our aerospace scientists will conquer space and will definitely plant the North Korean flag on the Moon".

July 4, 2017: North Korea tests its first ICBM, a ballistic missile it claims is capable of reaching the continental United States. The Hwasong-14 is tested again three weeks later.

December 19, 2022: North Korea claims to have conducted a "final-stage" test to develop a reconnaissance satellite.

March 16, 2023: North Korea test-fires the Hwasong-17 ICBM, its largest missile yet, which some analysts believe incorporates technology for space launch vehicles.

May 31, 2023: North Korea attempts to launch a reconnaissance satellite, but the missile crashes into the sea.

August 24, 2023: North Korea makes a second attempt to put a spy satellite into orbit, but fails when the rocket malfunctions. North Korea's spy agency says it's not a major problem and promises to try again in October.

September 13, 2023: During Kim Jong Un's visit to Russia, President Vladimir Putin said Russia would help North Korea build satellites.

November 21, 2023: North Korea launches a rocket and says it has successfully put a reconnaissance satellite into orbit.

November 28, 2023: North Korean state media said Kim Jong Un viewed photos of the White House, the Pentagon and US aircraft carriers sent back by spy satellites.

December 31, 2023: North Korea pledges to launch three new spy satellites in 2024.

January 15, 2024: North Korea claims to have tested a new solid-fuel hypersonic missile amid an increasingly intense race for a new generation of long-range missiles that are harder to detect and intercept.

May 27, 2024: North Korea says its new satellite-carrying rocket launch failed when it exploded in its first stage. State media reported that initial analysis suggested the cause was a newly developed liquid-fuel rocket engine.
