Binh Chau Commune (Binh Son District, Quang Ngai Province) is famous for its "ancient ship graveyard". The Binh Chau sea area has dozens of ancient shipwrecks, many of which have been salvaged, revealing thousands of valuable artifacts.
In Binh Chau, there is also a unique fish market located right on the beach. Every day, hundreds of traders from all over buy fish here to sell throughout the province.
Binh Chau commune has over 400 fishing boats with 2/3 of the population living on the sea. Of these, about 200 boats operate nearshore fishing.
Around 5am, the nearshore fishing fleet docks to sell fish. These boats mainly fish around Ly Son Island. The boats leave the port the day before, fish all night and return to shore the next day.
The fish is caught close to shore so it is quite fresh and delicious. Therefore, every day, 40-60 small traders from districts and cities in the province come here to buy fish to sell retail. A portion of the fish is bought and brought to the Central Highlands provinces for consumption.
The fishing boat docked about 100m from shore. The boat owner asked people to use a basket boat to transport the fish to shore.
As soon as the fish baskets arrived at the dock, dozens of traders rushed to choose and buy, creating a bustling scene.
Ms. Tran Thi Linh (Quang Ngai City) came to the fish market early in the morning. After about 1 hour, Ms. Linh bought 40kg of fish. Ms. Linh brought this fish back to retail in Quang Ngai City. "The fish is caught close to shore so it is very fresh, and the price is cheap. It takes 30km to get to the market, although it is far, but buying here to sell is profitable," Ms. Linh said.
Binh Chau fish market also creates jobs for many female workers. The work of carrying and sorting fish for hire helps each person earn 150,000-200,000 VND in a morning.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Chairman of Binh Chau Fisheries Union, the commune's nearshore fishing fleet operates very effectively. This fleet fishes during the day, so costs are low and risks are low. The seafood caught is consumed as soon as the ships dock.
"The nearshore fishing fleet creates many jobs for local people. Nearshore fishermen can earn 400,000-500,000 VND per day," Mr. Hung informed.
