Russia-Ukraine War 1/1: Russia takes control of Kurakhovo after launching a fierce counterattack against the thermal power plant and apartment buildings in the inner city.

On New Year's Day 2025, the Russian army took control of the city of Kurakhovo in the Donetsk region. This information was announced by war correspondent Yuri Kotenok on his personal Telegram page.

The city is ours! ”, wrote reporter Yuri Kotenok.

Accordingly, some combat groups of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are still in the settlement, but they are no longer capable of fighting and are being wiped out.

AFU recognizes Russian military breakthrough in Kurakhovo

Russian troops broke into the western Kurakhovo area and planted a flag near the Elektrostal plant. This was confirmed by an AFU serviceman nicknamed Manynoy.

They are there quite freely, there is no pressure. I would not be surprised if by tomorrow they clear the entire factory ,” said soldier Manynoy.

There is about 1km left from here to the western border of Kurakhovo. According to the Ukrainian analytical source DeepState, the industrial zone is a gray zone, that is, a disputed area between the two sides. A day earlier, the WarGonzo channel reported that the Russian flag was raised on a high-rise building in one of the Kurakhovo districts. The Yuzhny district and the high-rise apartment complex in Kurakhovo are no longer occupied by AFU forces.

The West assesses the consequences of Kurakhovo falling into Russian hands

In the south, the Ukrainian resistance pocket around the small town of Kurakhovo is weakening, opening up the prospect of a Russian advance through southern Donbass into the Dnieper region, now the country's industrial heartland, The New York Times wrote.

The New York Times stressed that the AFU's defense capabilities in the Kurakhovo area are weakening. After the aforementioned town, the city of Dnepropetrovsk will be the city where the Russian troops will head.

Austrian Colonel Markus Reisner noted that the Ukrainian army's defense line in Donbass is gradually collapsing, and the Russian offensive is becoming more effective. Accordingly, the AFU will soon completely withdraw from Kurakhovo. This will happen in the coming weeks, while the AFU may also lose the "strategically important" city of Chasov Yar, the expert added.

Russia to launch major offensive on Kurakhovo in final days of 2024

On December 28, AFU units were driven out of the industrial zone in Kurakhovo.

The Russian army is strengthening its positions along the front line and advancing into industrial zones, said Vladimir Rogov, chairman of the Russian Federation Public Committee on Sovereignty Issues.

The Telegram channel “Military Chronicle” notes that the fighting in Kurakhovo has shifted to the area of the thermal power plant. There is a large group of Ukrainian troops in the area of the thermal power plant, the exit from which has been unsafe for several weeks.

The political officer of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the 110th Brigade of the 51st Army of the Russian Army, nicknamed Yary, said that they had advanced 1 km into the city in a week. The officer noted that the complexity of the battles in Kurakhovo lies in the city's high-rise buildings.

Early on December 29, the Russian side began attacking the Kurakhovskaya thermal power plant. On the same day, the TASS news agency quoted frontline forces as saying that they had begun clearing the area of the thermal power plant as AFU combat groups were surrounded there.

Mr. Rogov noted that Russian troops took control of several administrative buildings of the station, Ukrainian troops began to retreat and fierce fighting took place in the city.

Russia prevents UAF counterattack in Kursk

Military Summary reported that since December 31, Ukraine has launched major attacks on Crimea and the Kursk region, using the latest Western weapons. Russian retaliation is likely to be rapid.

In Kursk, the Russians launched a full-scale offensive, overcoming the Ukrainian defenses in Sudzha. Fighting has broken out in the city center and the AFU is trying to counterattack. The Russians are focusing on two points of attack, the west and the east.

The Russian side had also advanced north of Pokrovsk and was closing in on the city's western supply routes.

Russian units now control two areas, Cherkasskaya Konopelka and the village of Agronom. Fierce fighting is taking place in the Makhnovka area, with the Russian vanguard only about 3 km from the city of Sudzha.

Earlier, the assault units of the Russian Northern Task Force reportedly broke through the defenses of the Ukrainian armed forces in the forest belt near Makhnovka and fortified several positions inside the area.

Currently, Russian troops have consolidated their positions in part of Makhnovka, but most of the area remains under AFU control. According to military correspondent Timofey Ermakov, battles are taking place not only on the outskirts but also inside the area.

The Russian advance was supported by armored vehicles, which used firepower to suppress Ukrainian forces in residential areas. The attack was launched from the south, posing a threat to Ukrainian defenses near Sudzha.

Makhnovka and its surroundings are strategically important as they straddle the main road leading to Sudzha. A successful attack on the area could allow Russian forces to advance further, posing a threat to AFU supply lines in the area.

Military bloggers reported that Russia was massing equipment and reserve forces at positions about 2 km from Sudzha. The build-up of forces indicates the Russians' intention to advance successfully in this direction.
