Before that, the delegation offered incense at the tomb of General Vo Nguyen Giap. During the journey, the delegation carried the flag of "Determination to Fight - Determination to Win" and a picture of General Vo Nguyen Giap with Quang Binh.
After the journey ends, the two relics will be presented by the Organizing Committee to the place of worship of General Vo Nguyen Giap in Muong Phang commune, Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province.
It is expected that 10 athletes will complete the distance of nearly 900km within 70 hours, corresponding to the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Giao Thong Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Organizing Committee of the THACO Marathon for Traffic Safety - Dien Bien Phu 2024, said that the relay race to Dien Bien is like the image of the old troops pouring into the battlefield to create a resounding victory that shook the world.
"The event is even more meaningful when the athletes start from the tomb of General Vo Nguyen Giap - the eldest brother of the Vietnam People's Army, Commander-in-Chief of the Dien Bien Phu campaign in the past," said Mr. Thang.
According to Mr. Thang, the THACO Marathon for Traffic Safety - Dien Bien Phu 2024 is jointly organized by Giao Thong Newspaper, National Traffic Safety Committee and Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee with sponsorship from Truong Hai Group Joint Stock Company, Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group and the organization.
For his part, athlete Nong Van Chuyen, representing the running group, expressed his pride at being chosen to undertake such a special journey: "We will strive to complete our goal. This is not just a normal run but also has great significance, as a tribute to the generation of fathers and brothers who fell for independence and freedom."
The award is part of a series of activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024); the 115th anniversary of the establishment of Dien Bien province (June 28, 1909 - June 28, 2024), National Tourism Year - Dien Bien Phu 2024 and Traffic Safety Year 2024.
In its third year of organization, THACO Marathon for Traffic Safety has expanded its scale, promising to gather about 1,300 domestic and international athletes participating in 5 distances including: 5km, 10km, 21km, 42km, 70km.
The race takes place on April 14th, with the 70km race starting at 4am, the 42km race starting at 6am, the 21km race starting at 7:30am and the remaining two races starting at 10am. The track will close at 9pm on the same day.
The Organizing Committee will award First, Second, and Third prizes for each distance, both men's and women's, with a total prize of nearly 100 million VND.
