DNVN - Artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to develop rapidly when OpenAI officially introduced the virtual assistant ChatGPT on landline phones.

According to OpenAI, starting from the afternoon of December 18 (local time), users in the US can use their landline phones to call and chat directly with ChatGPT. This experience is similar to Advanced Voice Mode - the real-time conversation feature that ChatGPT previously provided.

Users can now simply make a call to ask a question or get support from ChatGPT via their landline. They can also request translation assistance from ChatGPT. The company says the first 15 minutes of use will be free, after which the call will automatically end. Standard telecommunications charges may apply after the free period expires.

In addition to landline support, ChatGPT has also officially launched on the WhatsApp messaging platform. Here, users can chat directly with the virtual assistant without having to create a new account. However, the number of daily messages will be limited, and when the usage threshold is reached, users are recommended to download the ChatGPT application or use the desktop version.

OpenAI is also developing additional features for ChatGPT on WhatsApp, such as image analysis or online search, but it has not yet been revealed when these features will be officially announced.

OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil said the company’s goal is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) technology can serve all of humanity. Making the technology more accessible to users is a clear demonstration of that mission.

Previously, OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Search - an AI-powered online search engine, for all ChatGPT users and comes with a number of new features.

Instead of launching a standalone product, the search feature has been integrated directly into ChatGPT. Users can enable search mode by default or manually via the search icon on the interface.

When used, ChatGPT will automatically identify questions that need information and transfer them to the ChatGPT Search feature. In addition, users can directly click on the "Search the web" icon. This feature provides summary answers from various online sources, along with diverse content such as images or YouTube videos.

In a live stream on December 16, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Search is now faster and can be set as the default search engine on web browsers. In addition, the search experience on mobile devices has also been optimized, with results displayed in a more intuitive and easy-to-use way.

OpenAI’s new ChatGPT Search interface prototypes feature a design similar to Google or Google Maps but without the ads. In particular, this interface also bears a resemblance to Perplexity - an AI search engine that focuses on the chat experience and provides direct references in the answers.

Finally, ChatGPT Search is also integrated into Advanced Voice Mode - OpenAI's real-time conversation feature.

Since their introduction, chatbots like ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude have typically limited their information to a certain time period, which means they can’t provide the most recent data. In contrast, platforms like Google and Microsoft combine AI answers with web search results.

Some publishers have expressed concerns about AI search tools like ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews, saying they could reduce traffic to informational sites. A study from Raptive found that AI Overviews could lead to a 25% drop in traffic as users stopped clicking on source links.

OpenAI shared that it has taken feedback from partners to optimize how ChatGPT Search selects relevant articles, adjusts summary length, and uses citations appropriately.
