Chinese man travels thousands of miles to the Central Highlands to marry a Vietnamese girl in a wheelchair

Talking to Zhou ZhenQiao (32 years old, in Liaoning province), wheelchair-bound girl Thu Thuy did not think that her love for learning Chinese helped her become the main character of a fairy tale love.

Love you thousands of miles

Le Pham Hoai Thu Thuy (25 years old, Tuy Duc District, Dak Nong) had a motorbike accident when she was in 12th grade. Due to spinal cord injury, the girl was paralyzed in her limbs at the most beautiful age.

She made a pen to type on her phone and started using social media to connect with the outside world. Thuy also sells products online and works as a livestreamer for some stores to earn extra income.

In early 2021, because she liked Chinese, the girl tried to learn it herself. Wanting to talk to native speakers to increase her vocabulary, Thuy joined a Chinese chat app. Among hundreds of unfamiliar names, Thuy accidentally connected with Zhou ZhenQiao, a mechanical engineer living in Anshan City, Liaoning Province, China , nearly 6,000 km from Vietnam.

The first photo the couple took together was right after ZhenQiao arrived at Thuy's house at the beginning of the year.

For the first half month, Thuy hid the fact that she was paralyzed. The guy was shy and didn't let the girl see his face. Because of her limited Chinese, Thuy could only mumble a few simple words when talking via video. Sometimes, because she tried to pronounce, Thuy spoke loudly, making ZhenQiao feel like she was being very mean. Although she couldn't understand what the other person was saying, ZhenQiao still connected with Thuy every day. When he went to work, to the supermarket or wherever he went, he recorded a video and sent it to Thuy to watch.

"I want to talk to learn more vocabulary, it's lucky that you're willing to listen to me. I'm not confident about myself, I never thought I would love someone, let alone you're so far away," Thuy confided.

After nearly 2 months, ZhenQiao expressed his feelings for Thuy and sent her a photo of himself. That was when Thuy mustered up the courage to tell him about herself, to make him stop hoping.

"I accept having a lover in a wheelchair, that's not my problem," the mechanical engineer happily recounted.

Since he learned about his girlfriend's health condition, ZhenQiao has been more concerned about her. He proactively calls her every day, encourages her to do physical therapy, and gives in to her when they are angry with each other...

When he intended to visit his girlfriend in Vietnam, the Covid-19 epidemic broke out. China closed its borders for a long time, so they spent 2 years in a long-distance relationship.

Thuy and her husband had a ceremony at church before holding a party at their home in early August.

During this time, ZhenQiao did not only chat with Thuy. He wanted to understand more about Vietnam and his girlfriend's family, so he proactively tried to use Facebook to make friends with Thuy's parents and siblings. In return, Thuy also chatted with Ms. Zhang Shujuan (55 years old) - ZhenQiao's mother. The girl felt touched because Ms. Shujuan cared for her. Even though she came home late from work, she often texted Thuy to ask about her.

"Whenever the two of us were angry with each other, ZhenQiao often texted me to tell on us," Ms. Pham Hoang Trang (50 years old) - Thuy's mother recalled. Knowing that her daughter had feelings for a foreigner, seeing her happy, the mother did not stop her. However, she always told everyone, including Thuy, "You say you love her, but who knows when she will come here to think about marriage."

"I love Vietnam"

Early this year, as soon as China opened its doors, the young man immediately bought a plane ticket to Vietnam. Thuy's mother and younger brother were there to pick him up at Tan Son Nhat airport. At home, Thuy's father, Mr. Le Van Tinh (63 years old), was restless. It was 11:30 p.m., and the father still hadn't slept. Only when everyone met ZhenQiao did he breathe a sigh of relief, believing: "He really came back to see my daughter."

During the more than 5 hours on the bus back to Dak Nong at night, ZhenQiao did not sleep a wink, trying to talk to everyone. "Although it was my first time in Vietnam, I felt like I was coming home," the Vietnamese son-in-law recalled.

Thuy and her husband were radiant on their happy day.

During the 15 days he stayed at his girlfriend's house, he witnessed Thuy's difficult life. Although clumsy, he volunteered to take care of his girlfriend instead of his mother. Thuy's Chinese improved, and the two talked more about life. On the day her visa expired and she had to return, he held his girlfriend's hand and said: "Give me 20 days, I'll go back to do the paperwork, arrange my work, and then ask my parents to come over and ask for your hand in marriage."

"I have had feelings for him for more than 2 years, now that he has come back to meet me, I am happy. But I really don't dare to dream of having a wedding," Thuy confided.

Upon arriving home, ZhenQiao connected the two families through an online phone call. He introduced his parents to Thuy's family and asked for permission for the two to become husband and wife.

After finishing the arrangements, he returned to Vietnam and went to the district People's Committee with Thuy. The day he held the marriage certificate in his hand was also the day ZhenQiao had to return home. The young man quit his job, closed his own house, and prepared to go to Vietnam to be a son-in-law.

This time, the Vietnamese groom was exempted from a 5-year visa. His parents, however, were unable to come to Vietnam to attend their only son's wedding due to some procedures. "However, my father encouraged me and promised to come visit next year after retirement," he said.

In early August, the couple held a wedding ceremony at the church. Three days later, a cozy party took place at home with all their relatives. "I feel very lucky to have the support of both families," the girl said emotionally.

Knowing that her daughter-in-law wanted to have a baby, Thuy's mother-in-law told them not to be burdened by having a baby, but to let it happen naturally and keep their spirits up. The daughter-in-law's health was the most important thing.

ZhenQiao wore ao dai and prepared to enter the bride's house to pick up the bride according to Vietnamese traditional customs. Standing next to him was his wife's father's close friend, who, out of love, adopted him as his son.

Since the family had a son-in-law, Thuy's mother had more work to do. ZhenQiao took care of his wife single-handedly, from meals to brushing her teeth every morning and evening. The young man gradually got used to life in the peaceful Central Highlands.

Before meeting Thuy, ZhenQiao did not know much about Vietnam, but now it is different. The new son-in-law shows his love for his wife's homeland by proactively telling his wife: "Someday, please buy me some shirts with the words ' I love Vietnam' printed on them."

Before, Thuy had a hard time selling online alone, with a low income. Since getting married, her parents gave her a piece of land in front of the house to open a shoe store. ZhenQiao learned that there was no job in Dak Nong in his field. If he wanted to work, he would have to go all the way to Phu Quoc, but because he wanted to be with his wife, he would temporarily focus on helping her sell.

"We want to be together every day. I will take care of my wife, make up for the love and closeness that I haven't had the chance to show her in the 2 years of long-distance love," the groom shared.
