The decree published on Russia's official legal information portal states that Alexander Nikitich Darchiev was also appointed as the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, at the Russia-US talks in Saudi Arabia on February 18, the two sides reached an agreement to speed up the process of appointing new ambassadors for both countries.
Mr. Darchiev's predecessor, Mr. Anatoly Antonov, finished his term in Washington in October 2024.
Washington sent an official note to Moscow agreeing to the proposal to appoint Darchiev after talks in Istanbul on February 27. This is the result of the latest dialogue between Russia and the US aimed at normalizing relations, first of all, restoring diplomatic activities between the two countries.
Mr. Darchiev, 64, graduated from Moscow State University with a PhD in History. He has been working in the Russian diplomatic service since 1992 and is fluent in English and French. He spent 10 years working at the Russian Embassy in Washington in two periods: 1997-2002 and 2005-2010.
Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov, who used to be Darchiev's superior, assessed the new Russian ambassador as an expert with deep knowledge of US issues. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov also noted the new ambassador's professionalism.
