On March 8, in Binh Dinh, the Ministry of Information and Communications held a conference to deploy the 2024 work plan and summarize the 2023 emulation and reward movement in the field of radio and television.
Distributing radio and television content on digital platforms
Distributing content on digital platforms is one of the contents shared by radio and television units at the Conference. Mr. Do Le Thang, in charge of the Center for Digital Content Production and Development, Vietnam National Assembly Television, said that this unit is completing the final version of the "Strategy for Developing Vietnam National Assembly Television to 2030", which highlights the two pillars of production and distribution. According to Mr. Thang, for a long time, many production units have been operating on inertia and have spent a lot of resources on improving product quality. In fact, this is a difficult task, takes a lot of time and is certainly not enough. A good program that cannot be distributed to the audience will not be effective in promoting it.
Mr. Do Le Thang believes that the necessary and sufficient conditions for Internet television to take the throne are reasonable smart TV prices and Internet connection fees, high and stable access speed. Over-the-top (OTT) television viewing applications are an important content distribution orientation for Vietnam National Assembly Television. In addition to the presence of Channel 7 in an easily accessible position on most television viewing applications such as: TV360, VTVGo, MyTV, FPT Play, VieON, ClipTV... this unit also continues to expand cooperation in distributing VOD (video on demand) content on the most popular television viewing applications in Vietnam.
"Distributing mainstream press content on the Internet requires reporters and editors to go through a process of "recreating" content to suit the characteristics of each platform and user habits on that platform," said Mr. Thang.
Vietnam National Assembly Television also considers social media platforms to be an effective communication environment for the activities of the National Assembly as well as for its own brand. Although it was only launched in early 2022, so far, the Tiktok, Facebook, YouTube, and Zalo channels managed by Vietnam National Assembly Television have reached 800 million content views.
Sharing the same view, Mr. Vo Thanh Nhan, Deputy Director of Vinh Long Radio and Television Station, said that digital transformation will help create a difference and is an important solution for the sustainable development of the station in the coming time, including bringing content to digital platforms. This agency currently has 48 YouTube channels, including 6 gold button channels, 33 silver button channels; the total channels have over 30 million followers, more than 20 billion views.
Mr. Nhan said that promoting content on digital platforms contributes to generating revenue for the station in the context of advertising revenue shifting from television to digital platforms and social networks. Currently, the station's revenue through digital platforms mainly comes from YouTube channels, livestream on Facebook, and the free TV viewing application THVLi.
Broadcasters need to reclaim digital space
Speaking at the Conference, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam said that producing radio and television content that meets the needs of audiences on digital platforms will determine success.
Along with that, the trend of applying artificial intelligence technology will help increase labor productivity, shorten the gap between technology and content production processes, and help reduce costs. Businesses now consider AI as one of the new production methods, a new production force that helps cut costs.
"This brings many challenges, but on the contrary, it solves problems, gradually reducing labor costs in areas that technology and AI can replace in the future," said Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam.
The issue of regaining digital space for the station by appearing more and more on digital platforms was also mentioned by Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam at the Conference.
The Deputy Minister analyzed that local stations have appeared on digital platforms and are transmitted by third parties such as TV360, MyTV, VTVcab, VieON. Local channels need to request third parties to provide viewership data of that channel to the station, the stations are the owners or at least co-owners of that data.
According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam, the interest of radio stations in broadcasting is still not large enough. There is a lot of room for radio, especially podcasts, which are a new trend. Communication between humans and smart objects will gradually shift from eyes to ears, voice, voice commands and AI...
“Currently, we have not yet agreed on a method to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of radio programs, nor have we planned clear strategies for radio. It is necessary to soon unify basic indicators to measure, evaluate, and publicize the quality of radio programs and channels on all platforms,” Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam emphasized.
