The journey of building and growing up
Over the past 78 years, since the establishment of the Bac Kan armed forces (April 13, 1947), the militia and self-defense forces have continuously grown and matured; they are an important factor contributing to protecting the peace of the homeland, creating favorable conditions for people to work and produce with peace of mind.

With the characteristics of a mountainous province, the establishment of militia and self-defense units in all localities, agencies and units to fight to protect the homeland and the resistance bases is very important. On April 13, 1947, at Doc Lap hill (Bac Kan town, now Bac Kan city), the Bac Kan Provincial Militia Command was established. The birth of the Militia and Self-defense Provincial Command (now the Provincial Military Command) marked an important turning point for the development of the Bac Kan armed forces, including the militia and self-defense force. Immediately after its establishment, the Militia and Self-defense Provincial Command immediately set about building, consolidating and developing the force. On the first day of its establishment, despite many difficulties, about 2 months later, the whole province had built 17 militia and guerrilla companies with 1,500 officers and soldiers equipped with relatively adequate weapons, ready to fight to protect the homeland. Many glorious feats were achieved by the army and people of Bac Kan, contributing to the whole country's efforts to eliminate the yoke of French colonialism.
After being liberated, the armed forces of Bac Kan and the people of all ethnic groups began to consolidate the locality, destroy bandits, protect the safety of the Party Central Committee, and places such as Na Pau Hill, Ban Ca where Uncle Ho lived and worked; Khuoi Lim, Na Quan, the Party Central Committee's base (Cho Don)... were always absolutely protected. It was from here that many policies and guidelines of the resistance war against French colonialism were transmitted to all parts of the country.
During the resistance war against the US to save the country and the war to protect the northern border, the army and people of Bac Kan continued to contribute their efforts and blood for the independence of the Fatherland. With the achievements gained over 78 years of building, fighting and growing up of the Bac Kan armed forces, including the militia and self-defense forces, the Party and State have awarded many noble titles, orders and medals.
Lieutenant Colonel Ly Van Ninh - Deputy Chief of Staff of the Provincial Military Command said that throughout the process of building, fighting and growing, the armed forces of Bac Kan, including the provincial militia and self-defense force, have always been a solid support for the Party Committee and the government and have created the trust of the people of all ethnic groups in the province. The Bac Kan militia and self-defense force is worthy of Uncle Ho's teaching: "The militia and self-defense force and guerrillas are the forces of the entire nation, an invincible force, an iron wall of the Fatherland, no matter how brutal the enemy is, if they touch that force, that wall, any enemy will have to disintegrate".
Continue the glorious history
Promoting the heroic revolutionary tradition, the Bac Kan armed forces in general and the militia and self-defense forces in particular continue to write glorious history, contributing to protecting and building an increasingly beautiful homeland.

After 3 years of participating in the militia of Thuong Quan commune (Ngan Son), Hoang Van Anh has been commended every year for his diligence, seriousness in training and especially his ability to shoot with almost "100% accuracy". When selected to participate in the National Defense Sports Festival in 2024, Anh has worked hard to practice and achieved high results in competitions, specifically at the provincial level, he won the first prize, the Military Region level won the second prize for individuals, the entire army won the second prize for individuals and the first prize for men's teams. Along with that, Anh has always been proactive in participating in natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue in the locality. Wishing to contribute more to the army and the country, at the end of 2024, Anh volunteered to write an application to join the army and is currently training new recruits at the 750th Infantry Regiment of the Provincial Military Command.

For many years now, during the training season, the militia force of Quan Ha commune (Bach Thong) has organized to help people, especially families with meritorious services to the revolution and those who have contributed to the revolution. In 2024, nearly 100 militiamen and officials and civil servants of the commune helped weed corn for the family of Ms. Trieu Thi Canh (wife of a martyr) in Tan Xuan village and clear forest hills for the family of Ms. Ly Thi Dau (mother of a martyr) in Thom Mo village. This year, in April, it is expected that the militia force will mobilize forces to help families with meritorious services, poor and near-poor households transport materials to build houses under the province's program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses.
From 1997 to 2024, the provincial militia force has always been assessed as completing its tasks well and is a reliable support for local Party committees, authorities and people. The militia force coordinated with security and order protection forces with 27,547 participants; more than 14,000 people participated in natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue; more than 7,000 people participated in forest fire fighting; contributed more than 54,000 working days to help people. All of the above actions and deeds further enhance the image of the armed forces in the hearts of the people, writing more glorious pages in the new period of the Bac Kan militia force.
Contribute to protecting the country early and from afar
Along with the militia and self-defense forces of the whole country, in the current revolutionary period, the militia and self-defense forces of Bac Kan increasingly affirm their strategic role and position in building the national defense, contributing to protecting the country early and from afar.
Based on the basic contents of the Law on Militia and Self-Defense (2019), the province has done a good job of reviewing, registering, and managing citizens of legal age. In particular, localities have linked the building of Militia and Self-Defense forces with the building of a strong political base and a solid defense zone, achieving practical results. The political quality and reliability of Militia and Self-Defense forces have been constantly improved.
Currently, the province has 183 militia and self-defense units, accounting for nearly 3.3% of the province's population. The rate of party members in the militia and self-defense force is 27.5% and the rate of union members is nearly 57%. 108 communes, wards and towns have established commune-level military cells, contributing to enhancing the role and effectiveness of the Party's leadership and direction of local defense and military work. The widespread establishment of militia and self-defense units throughout the province helps the provincial armed forces have more "eyes and ears" at the grassroots level, enhancing their mobility and combat strength in the new situation.
Colonel Hua Chien Thang - Deputy Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command said that throughout the process of building, fighting and growing, the Bac Kan armed forces in general and the militia and self-defense forces in particular have always been a reliable support for the Party Committee, the government and the people of all ethnic groups in the province. In response to the requirements of the new situation, the building of a strong and widespread militia and self-defense force has received more attention. That is also the way Bac Kan builds a national defense foundation, a position of people's hearts and builds a strong provincial defense area./.
