On May 3, the Ministry of Health held the launching ceremony of the “Excellent Grassroots Health 2024” Competition. The competition had the participation of 17 teams from 3 regions: North, Central and South.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan said that Vietnam is one of the few countries with a complete healthcare network, widely organized down to the villages and hamlets, and is a model that many countries are interested in and learn from.

Up to now, 100% of districts, towns, provincial cities, and centrally-run cities have medical centers; 99.6% of communes, wards, and towns have medical stations; 97.3% of commune medical stations meet national criteria on commune health in the 2011-2020 period. Grassroots medical staff has been gradually consolidated, 92.4% of commune medical stations have doctors working; 78.9% of commune medical stations have doctors working on a permanent basis; the number of highly qualified medical staff is increasing.

In particular, facilities and equipment have been invested in upgrading and improving, with nearly 80% of commune health stations being solidly invested. The capacity and quality of providing medical services at grassroots health facilities have been increasingly improved, basically fulfilling assigned functions and tasks, and people's satisfaction with medical services has been improved.

According to the Minister of Health, in recent times, the grassroots health system and preventive medicine have achieved many successes in caring for, protecting and improving people's health. However, in the current context, there are still many issues that the health sector needs to prioritize, such as population aging, prevention of infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and high rates of malnutrition and stunting in remote, isolated and mountainous areas. Therefore, primary health care in the community is always extremely important and of great significance.

Primary health care is not only the first place to provide health care services, but also the pillar of the health system, helping to maintain the health of the whole community. Primary health care workers are the soldiers on the front lines in the fight against disease and protecting and improving public health, creating a healthy community.
