Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development directs emergency response to floods in the North

Heavy rains have caused some reservoirs in the North to continuously discharge floodwaters.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, due to the impact of rain and floods from July 27 to 30, 2024, in the mountainous provinces of the North, 7 people were recorded dead or missing (Ha Giang 2 people, Dien Bien 2 people, Son La 1 person, Thai Nguyen 1 person, Bac Giang 1 person). The main cause was that people participating in traffic were swept away by floods and buried by landslides.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that from now until August 2, 2024, the Northern region will continue to have moderate to heavy rain, some places will have very heavy rain, locally over 200mm; there is a high risk of continued floods, flash floods, and landslides.

To proactively respond to and overcome the consequences caused by natural disasters, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development requests the People's Committees of the provinces and cities in the Northern region and relevant ministries and agencies to strictly implement the Prime Minister's direction in Official Dispatch No. 72/CD-TTg; Official Dispatch No. 5378/BNN-DD of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In the coming days, it is necessary to strengthen propaganda activities, disseminate instructions on skills to respond to heavy rains, flash floods, landslides and inundation so that people know, proactively prevent, avoid and minimize damage on information systems and social networks.

Review and add forces to guard, control, guide, and support traffic safety through culverts, landslide areas or areas at risk of landslides, deeply flooded areas, and areas with strong currents. Resolutely do not allow people and vehicles to pass through if safety is not ensured.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also requested localities to closely monitor the development of floods and rains, update regularly to inform the authorities and people to proactively prevent and ensure timely, effective, and close to the natural disaster situation in the area. Prepare forces and means for rescue when there is a situation.
