Many lecturers at the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) reacted to this request of the school. They said that admissions consulting is the job of the admissions department, so there is no reason to force lecturers and researchers to study admissions regulations to take the exam.

Take the test up to 20 times, must get 10/10 points

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) has just sent an email to all staff and employees of the school to deploy internal communication about the school's enrollment work in 2024.

According to the school, to help all employees and workers have a source of information for reference, the brand management and communications department in conjunction with the training department compiled and published the document "School information and admission information of the University of Science and Technology in 2024".

This is a comprehensive document with 4 main parts including: overview of the University of Technology, 2024 enrollment information, enrollment regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and information about the competency assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University.

In addition, to ensure that all officials and employees are fully aware of the above information, the University of Science and Technology requests that officials and employees take an assessment test from 5:00 a.m. on May 25 to 5:00 a.m. on May 27.

The test structure consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. Officials and employees will take the test on the school's network system.

According to the school's list, 1,068 people including lecturers, specialists, teaching assistants, researchers and engineers of the school must participate in this test.

Notably, the school stipulates: "The maximum number of times and time to do the test is 20 times, the time to do the test at a time is 120 minutes. The school requires civil servants and employees to achieve 10 points (on a scale of 10) to complete the test to ensure a firm grasp of all the information."

After receiving the above information, many lecturers and researchers of the school were upset: "Admission consulting is the responsibility of the communications department, the training department... why are lecturers and researchers forced to take this test? What is more absurd is that taking the test requires a perfect score. Is this any different from having to memorize the admission regulations to take the test?".

In addition, some other lecturers said that they had participated in the admissions consulting group with the faculty and school and had taken this test themselves before, but now the school required them to do it again.

"While many people are very busy invigilating exams, reviewing theses, and sitting in committees all day on Saturday and Sunday. Taking this test has nothing to do with their expertise and teaching and research duties," a group of lecturers reflected.

Don't force faculty to memorize or become admissions consultants.

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Associate Professor Dr. Bui Mai Huong - Head of the school's brand management and communications department - said that in the context of the University of Science and Technology's admission regulations having many new points, the school is clearly aware of the importance of admission work.

In reality, parents, candidates and the community always consider information from school staff and lecturers as an important channel. However, most staff and lecturers only understand their own field of expertise or some other related fields and do not have an overall view of changes in admission methods, tuition fees, scholarships, etc.

"In reality, there was some inaccurate advice during the consultation process for students and parents. Therefore, the school has implemented internal communication activities about the school's enrollment information for 2024 to staff and employees," Ms. Huong explained.

According to Ms. Huong, to ensure that employees and workers have a clear understanding of the information, the school requires them to take an information test on the school's internal system.

Because it is installed on the system, there is a prior notice to the staff about the maximum number of times to do the test is 20 times, the time to do the test 1 time is 120 minutes. The assessment of completing the test is to answer 30/30 questions correctly to avoid errors in the process of transmitting information.

"Clearly announcing the number of times and time to do the test helps teachers arrange their time. In case they are doing the test and are busy with other things, the system will record and count the number of times they do it or will automatically stop after 120 minutes so that teachers can arrange their time. The school does not require staff and lecturers to memorize or become admissions consultants," Ms. Huong affirmed.

"Admissions is the responsibility of the lecturer"

In addition, Ms. Huong also said that enrollment is one of the important tasks of the school, so it should be included by the units as one of the tasks under task 3 (task 1: teaching, task 2: scientific research and task 3: other tasks) of a lecturer.

Explaining why some lecturers who had taken the test now had to do it again, Ms. Huong said: "The school has reviewed this issue and does not require lecturers in the admissions and career counseling team who took the multiple-choice test in March and April 2024 to retake the multiple-choice test.

However, teachers need to update additional information as mentioned above in many ways such as through admission flyers, information on the school website, admissions consulting handbook, etc. The time to complete the test on the internal system will increase by a number of days compared to the original announcement."
