TPO - On the morning of December 31, the sky in Ho Chi Minh City was covered with thick fog, with fine dust concentrations exceeding the permissible threshold many times. According to the forecast from the meteorological agency, on the last day of 2024, there is a possibility of unseasonal rain in some areas in Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces and cities.
On the morning of December 31, the weather in Ho Chi Minh City is cool, with the lowest temperature around 22-24 degrees Celsius, weak sunshine, and dense fog appearing in many places.
According to the reporter's records, at nearly 9 am, everywhere in Ho Chi Minh City was still covered by a thick layer of fog. High-rise buildings and residential areas were obscured and blurred by the opaque white fog.
With a visibility of about 1km, areas along the Saigon River such as Binh Trieu Bridge and high-rise buildings are all covered, creating a blurry scene.
The Air Visual air monitoring application (part of the IQAir organization that owns a huge amount of aggregated data on air quality, headquartered in Switzerland) shows that many areas in Ho Chi Minh City have air quality measurement points that are not good for health.
Specifically, according to the Air Visual application, the concentration of PM 2.5 fine dust (PM2.5 fine dust is particulate matter floating in the air with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller) in Ho Chi Minh City at 9:00 a.m. on December 31 was 57 µg/m³ (the allowable level is about 5 µg/m³).
"The concentration of fine dust PM 2.5 in Ho Chi Minh City is currently 11.4 times higher than the value according to WHO's annual air quality guidelines," Air Visual said.
Previously, informing reporters, Mr. Le Dinh Quyet, Head of Hydrometeorological Forecasting Department, Southern Hydrometeorological Station, said that the cause of fog in the last days of the year in Ho Chi Minh City is due to high humidity creating a layer of fog near the ground. "With this phenomenon, during the New Year and Lunar New Year, there will still be some days with fog" - Mr. Quyet commented.
According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, the continental cold high pressure is currently strengthening and weakening in the North, then weakening and moving eastward. The continental cold high pressure is forecast to strengthen again around January 2-3, 2025. Above, the subtropical high pressure with an axis through the Central region is operating stably. The easterly wind disturbance above (causing rain) tends to operate from January 2-3, 2025 and affect the region.
The Meteorological Agency forecasts that the weather in Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces today (December 31) will be cloudy, with showers and thunderstorms in some places in the late afternoon and at night, with the lowest temperature ranging from 21-24 degrees Celsius, the highest from 29-32 degrees Celsius, and some places above 32 degrees Celsius.
