Having quietly invested in table tennis for nearly 20 years, Mr. Hien has enjoyed the sweet fruit of the historic gold medals of Tran Mai Ngoc and Dinh Anh Hoang. But the aspiration of the founder of T&T Group is even greater than that.
When Dinh Anh Hoang and Tran Mai Ngoc won the historic gold medal in the mixed doubles event for Vietnamese table tennis at the 32nd SEA Games, many people would probably be surprised to know that behind that achievement and glory is the figure of businessman Do Quang Hien - or still known by the familiar name "Bau Hien".
Talking about Mr. Hien is talking about football, talking about Hanoi Football Club - the most successful football team in Vietnam with 6 national championships, 3 national cups and currently holding the record of 5 national super cup wins. Hanoi Football Club has always contributed more than half of the key players to the Vietnamese national teams, becoming the pride of the capital.
But perhaps many people do not know that Mr. Hien has been quietly investing in table tennis since 2007 until now, leaving a huge mark on the Vietnamese table tennis environment. In October 2007, Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club was established with 100% investment capital from T&T Group, with modern facilities and equipment, always invested and innovated.
The philosophy of businessman Do Quang Hien when investing in football in particular and sports in general is that there must be love and aspiration. Aspiration must be expressed through high achievements, but those high achievements must be developed sustainably and come from youth training. The story of recruiting legendary tennis player Vu Manh Cuong to take on the role of Head Coach of Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club is one of the evidences for the investment, fundamental from the roots and sustainable according to the philosophy of Mr. Hien.
At that time, Coach Vu Manh Cuong had everything in his hometown Hai Duong with the position of Head of the Provincial Table Tennis Department, a large team of assistants and athletes, while Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club was just a big zero. But Coach Vu Manh Cuong was conquered by the love and aspiration of Mr. Hien, to decide to join Mr. Hien, traveling all over the country to find young talents to train, nurture, and lay the first bricks to build the brand of Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club.
Since 2008, Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club has won many medals, ranked first in national youth tournaments over the years, and contributed many athletes to the Vietnamese national team and the Vietnamese youth team to compete in international tournaments.
“When you are an athlete, you can just focus on training and competing to bring achievements to the country. But when you have a wife, children and become a coach, you also need to take care of your family. Coming to Mr. Hien, I can both work and take care of my family. With the Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club, Mr. Hien supports us in everything and allows us to make our own professional decisions. When we need any facilities, Mr. Hien always provides them. When the team competes and has achievements, we report them and are rewarded," Coach Vu Manh Cuong shared.
The historic gold medal that Mai Ngoc and Anh Hoang just won at the 32nd SEA Games is proof of the success in the focused and effective investment of Mr. Hien and T&T Group in table tennis, contributing to the glory of Vietnamese sports.
At the ceremony to honor the athletes of Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club who achieved excellent results at the 32nd SEA Games with a total bonus of up to 1.15 billion VND for Tran Mai Ngoc, Dinh Anh Hoang, Le Dinh Duc, the Coaching Board of the Vietnam National Team and the Coaching Board of Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club, Mr. Hien expressed his concerns and aspirations more than once on how to bring Vietnamese table tennis to the continental level.
According to Mr. Hien, table tennis is a sport that is widespread in Vietnam. Activities to build a movement of training and competing in table tennis in units and localities across the country are developing and highly appreciated. Many athletes have grown up and contributed to the national team from local movements and this is an abundant resource that the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation and local clubs need to take advantage of, not to waste talents.
Personally, Mr. Hien proposed that T&T Group would cooperate with the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation to send talents like Mai Ngoc or Anh Hoang for long-term training in China to improve their skills and gain more achievements for Vietnamese sports.
In a recent statement, General Secretary of the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation Phan Anh Tuan shared that the operating model of the Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club is proving its superiority through achievements in domestic and regional tournaments. If Vietnamese table tennis wants to develop, it needs many training centers similar to the Hanoi T&T Table Tennis Club of Mr. Hien.
After Mai Ngoc and Anh Hoang's achievements, Nguyen Xuan Vu, President of the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation, said that the Federation has a strategy to mobilize and find individual sponsors for athletes, in order to motivate athletes to focus on professional training, and at the same time, continue to invest so that athletes can compete, train to improve their skills and experience, and build the next generation of athletes with the goal of achieving even higher results.
