Journalism and the lives of ethnic minorities

Over the years, the press has become an effective propaganda channel for the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, especially on ethnic, religious and national solidarity policies.

Hong Dan District (Bac Lieu) has more than 14% of the population being ethnic minorities, of which the Khmer ethnic group accounts for more than 12.93%. Along with the general development of the province and the whole country, the quality of life of the people in the district is increasingly improving, including the majority of ethnic minorities.

The driving force to create momentum for Hong Dan countryside in general and ethnic minority areas in particular to develop as they are today has an important contribution from mass media, making the cultural and spiritual life of the people increasingly rich.

Mr. Danh Cao - Head of the Ethnic Affairs Department of Hong Dan district - said that mass media in general and the press in particular have made important contributions to socio-economic development, poverty reduction, political and ideological education, raising awareness and vigilance against the plots of hostile forces.

At the same time, preserve national identity and criticize and repel social evils as well as continue to expose the plots of hostile forces to incite and sabotage the great solidarity of ethnic groups.

According to the leader of the Hong Dan District Ethnic Affairs Department, the press has also actively promoted the implementation of ethnic policies, contributing to promoting the patriotic emulation movements "The whole country joins hands to build new rural areas" and the Campaign "The whole people unite to build cultural life in residential areas" associated with the Campaign "The whole people unite to build new rural areas - Civilized urban areas".

According to statistics, 100% of households in Hong Dan district have audio and visual equipment. FM radio stations have guaranteed coverage in the district. In addition, in 71/71 hamlets, there are speaker clusters and wireless receivers, basically meeting your needs for listening to the radio.

All types of press publications are delivered in a timely manner to be provided free of charge periodically to beneficiaries in ethnic minority and particularly disadvantaged areas according to Prime Minister's Decision 59 with 5,673 issues of newspapers and magazines of all kinds.

Therefore, monks, Buddhists in 5 Khmer pagodas and prestigious people in ethnic minority areas, along with a large number of cadres, party members, union members, association members, and people from all walks of life have regularly accessed and grasped current events and useful information through official channels such as television, radio, and press publications.

At the same time, the district also strengthens propaganda and launches the "Reading Culture" movement among cadres, union members, association members and all classes of people; the district library coordinates with the Front and unions to promote the reading culture movement, each hamlet has a corner of newspapers and reference materials, communes and pagodas all have bookcases or communal cultural libraries attached to community Internet access points for cadres and people to exploit and refer to information.

Thanks to useful information channels, it has contributed to propagating the Party's guidelines and resolutions, the State's policies and laws as well as local policies to all classes of people, and the need to enjoy spiritual culture of ethnic minorities in particular has been constantly improved.

Thereby also creating consensus, strengthening the great national unity bloc, making the patriotic emulation movement of the masses "Solidarity, joining hands to build new rural areas - civilized urban areas" in ethnic minority areas more exciting, practical and effective.

Mr. Diep Cop - a farmer in Ba Ai 1 hamlet (Loc Ninh commune) - happily said that after tiring working hours, his family has a habit of sitting together to watch the news in the province, in the country and entertainment programs on TV.

"I often read current news and effective production models in newspapers. What impresses me most is that through information on newspapers and radio, I see my hometown developing and innovating more and more. Everyone in my hamlet is excited because since the launch of the new rural construction movement, life has changed more clearly," Mr. Cop confided.
