According to the weather department, severe heatwave is likely to hit several states. The IDM has issued red alerts in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh. A milder orange alert has also been activated in East Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and West Madhya Pradesh.
In red alert areas, people of all ages are at very high risk of heatstroke and sunstroke, and vulnerable people need special care, the IMD said. In orange alert areas, people exposed to the sun for long periods or doing strenuous outdoor work are advised to take extra precautions.
IDM also requires people to limit going out, stay in cool places, and make sure to drink enough water, even if they do not feel thirsty.
Most areas in India are currently suffering from a heat wave with temperatures reaching over 45 degrees Celsius, seriously affecting people's health and livelihoods.
