Police cars at the scene of a shooting in Farmington
The latest shooting occurred on May 15 in a residential area in Farmington, New Mexico, about 290 km northwest of Albuquerque, the state's largest city, but there was little information from authorities, according to Reuters.
The Farmington Police Department said two officers were injured during a shootout with the suspect, who was shot and killed at the scene. There were multiple civilian victims, and at least three of them died.
Police said the suspect is an 18-year-old man and appears to have acted alone. Officials have not released any information about the three victims.
The two injured officers — one from the Farmington Police Department and one from the New Mexico State Police Department — were treated at San Juan Regional Hospital and are in stable condition.
Police said law enforcement had sealed off seven blocks around the scene of the shooting, including the grounds of two churches.

The gun violence also led to a lockdown at several public schools in Farmington, a city of about 46,000. Police said there was no longer a threat to the public after the suspect was killed and the lockdown was lifted.
“This is another reminder of how gun violence destroys lives in our state and our country every day,” New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement.
Last month in Farmington, police shot and killed an armed man in his home, then exchanged gunfire with his wife, in what police said was an accidental domestic violence call.
Farmington was also the site of a deadly high school shooting in December 2017, in which a gunman shot and killed two students before taking his own life.
The May 15 incident was one of at least 225 mass shootings recorded in the United States so far this year, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive. The group defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are injured or killed, not including the shooter.
