Positive import and export in the first days of the year

ANTD.VN - Vietnam's import and export of goods in the first days of the year increased by 4.3% compared to the same period last year, with a surplus in the trade balance of goods.

The latest preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs show that the total value of Vietnam's import and export of goods in the first 15 days of 2024 (from January 1 to January 15, 2024) reached 29.79 billion USD, a slight decrease of 0.6% (equivalent to a decrease of 189 million USD) compared to the results in the second half of December 2023.

However, compared to the same period in 2023, import and export in the first 15 days of January 2024 increased by 4.3%, equivalent to an increase of 1.24 billion USD. Of which, export increased by 3.3%, equivalent to an increase of 488 million USD; import increased by 5.4%, equivalent to an increase of 752 million USD.

In the first 15 days of 2024, the total import-export value of foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises reached 20.49 billion USD, an increase of 0.9% (equivalent to an increase of 174 million USD) over the same period in 2023; the import-export value of domestic enterprises was 9.3 billion USD, an increase of 12.7% (equivalent to an increase of 1.05 billion USD) over the same period in 2023.

The trade balance of goods had a surplus of 384 million USD in the first 15 days of the year.

Import and export of goods in the first days of the year increased compared to the same period last year.

More specifically, regarding exports: The total value of Vietnam's exported goods during the period reached nearly 15.09 billion USD, down 7.5% (equivalent to a decrease of 1.23 billion USD in absolute terms) compared to the previous 15 days.

Of which: computers, electronic products and components decreased by 923 million USD, equivalent to a decrease of 29.1%; machinery, equipment, tools and other spare parts decreased by 330 million USD, equivalent to a decrease of 16.8%; textiles and garments decreased by 261 million USD, equivalent to a decrease of 16.8%...

Regarding imports: The total value of Vietnam's imported goods in the period reached 14.7 billion USD, an increase of 7.6% (equivalent to an increase of 1.04 billion USD in absolute terms) compared to the results in the second half of December 2023.

Of which: computers, electronic products and components increased by 508 million USD, equivalent to an increase of 13.5%; phones of all kinds and components increased by 112 million USD, equivalent to an increase of 32.1%; iron and steel of all kinds increased by 104 million USD, equivalent to an increase of 24.8%...

Previously, according to UOB Bank's assessment, although external demand recovered towards the end of the year, exports still recorded a full-year decline of 4.3% and imports fell by 9.1%, the largest decline since 2009 when the world was caught up in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis.

On the positive side, Vietnam still recorded a trade surplus for the eighth consecutive year, reaching a record high of $28 billion.

All major export products, except for “computers, electronic products and components”, will decline in 2023. Of which, exports of the mobile phone segment will decrease by nearly 8% in 2023 while exports of textiles, footwear, and many other items will decrease by double digits during the year.

Despite the decline, exports to major markets will continue to grow in 2023, albeit at a slower pace. The United States remains Vietnam's largest export market, reaching $97 billion in the year, with a market share of 27.4%. This is followed by China at $60.7 billion, a market share of 17%, and South Korea at $23.4 billion...

In 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Trade aims to increase exports by 6%, with the trade surplus expected to last for the ninth consecutive year.

This year, global trade is expected to remain affected by conflict around the Red Sea region – which accounts for 12% of global trade and is passed through by 17,000 ships annually.
