Give out more blankets and rice
The Brief History of Vietnam tells that in the winter of 1055, during the Great Cold season, the weather was very cold. The king said to his courtiers: “I am in the palace, warming myself with a charcoal stove, wearing a mink coat, but I am still this cold. Thinking of the prisoners in prison, shackled and in pain, not knowing whether they are right or wrong, not having enough to eat, not wearing enough to cover their bodies, suffering from the cold wind, freezing to death, I feel very sorry for them.” After the king finished speaking, he ordered the Right Ty officials to give more blankets and mats to the prisoners and provide them with two meals a day. The king also issued an edict to exempt the people from taxes that year.
Before that, the king ordered the destruction of torture instruments. Another time in the summer of 1064, the king was sitting in the Thien Khanh palace trying a case. At that time, Princess Dong Tien was standing by, the king pointed at the princess and told the court officials: “I love my daughter as much as I love the people. Many people do not understand and are caught in the law, I feel very sorry for them. From now on, regardless of whether the crime is serious or minor, all sentences must be reduced.”
Ly Thanh Tong was close to the people, cared about all aspects of people's lives, when there was a natural disaster or crop failure, he issued emergency orders, plowed the fields in the spring, went to see rice planting, fished, and in the summer went to see boating, visited and encouraged people to plant rice. Therefore, he was admired by the people.
