Vietnamese disabled athletes are proud to receive the Labor Medal

At the 2023 Forum to Listen to the Voices of People with Disabilities, held on November 29, athletes and coaches of disabled sports teams with outstanding achievements in 2023 were honored and received noble awards from Party and State leaders.

The organizing committee honored the outstanding achievements of coaches and athletes with disabilities.

The program is organized by the Vietnam National Committee for Persons with Disabilities, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Central Youth Union, and the Vietnam Paralympic Association to celebrate International Day for Persons with Disabilities (December 3).

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoi, Deputy Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, Vice Chairman of the National Committee for People with Disabilities in Vietnam, the Party and State pay great attention to the work of caring for people with disabilities, creating all conditions and having many support policies, helping people with disabilities to rise up, overcome themselves to master their lives and have equal civil rights.

In particular, in the field of sports, sports activities of people with disabilities have contributed significantly to the golden record of achievements of Vietnamese sports. Many athletes with disabilities have been honored in regional and international sports arenas.

Notably, in 2023, the Vietnamese disabled sports delegation ranked 3rd overall at the 12th ASEAN Para Games, with 66 gold medals, 58 silver medals, and 78 bronze medals.

Leaders of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Central Youth Union awarded certificates of merit to disabled athletes.

At the 4th ASIAN Para Games held in Hangzhou, (China), the final result was that Vietnam ranked 22nd out of 44 participating countries and territories, winning 20 medals of all kinds (1 gold, 10 silver, 9 bronze).

Appreciating the efforts and outstanding achievements of the athletes, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong emphasized: "At international sports events and tournaments, there are many shining examples of the extraordinary will and determination of Vietnamese disabled athletes. They have shown their efforts, tried to train, overcome their own shortcomings and obstacles to achieve outstanding achievements, contributing to bringing glory and pride to the country."

In order for the physical education and sports movement for people with disabilities to develop strongly and widely from the grassroots level, attracting more and more people with disabilities to participate in training, improve their health, improve themselves, and integrate into the community, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong suggested that all levels, sectors, organizations, unions and the whole society pay attention and take many measures. In particular, strengthening the training and fostering of a team of coaches, instructors, and physical education and sports collaborators with sufficient knowledge and capacity, enthusiasm and responsibility in the field of physical education and sports activities for people with disabilities, focusing on scientific research, first of all on the content and methods of training and health care for people with disabilities.

At the program, authorized by the President and Prime Minister, the Organizing Committee awarded the President's Third Class Labor Medal to 22 coaches and athletes with disabilities and presented the Prime Minister's Certificate of Merit to 11 coaches and athletes with disabilities with outstanding achievements, bringing glory to the Fatherland at the 12th ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia.

Touched by being honored at the program, swimmer Le Tien Dat expressed: "Since I was a child, I have lived in a river environment, passionate about swimming, I have always aspired to excel. Although the ASEAN Para Games encountered difficulties in the weather, the athletes tried their best to compete to bring glory to the Fatherland. Being recognized by the Party and the State, we are very proud and will continue to try to practice, bringing higher achievements to the Vietnamese sports delegation. I dream that one day, I will achieve an Asian gold medal."

As for chess athlete Nguyen Thi Hong, the feeling of receiving the certificate of merit was as exciting as entering a chess final. "When I stood on the podium and heard the Vietnamese National Anthem, I was extremely moved because I had contributed a small part to the achievements of the sports delegation. Besides practicing for competitions, I wish to open a chess class for children, especially children with disabilities, to help them gain confidence and determination to succeed in life," Hong expressed.

According to the Vietnam National Committee for Persons with Disabilities, Vietnam currently has over 7 million people with disabilities, accounting for more than 7% of the population aged 2 and over. Of these, people with severe and extremely severe disabilities account for about 28.9%, and about 10% of people with disabilities are from poor and near-poor households.

To date, more than 1.1 million people with disabilities have received monthly social benefits and free health insurance cards.
