Quang Tri province shares a 179.345 km border with the Lao provinces of Savannakhet and Salavan. There are 62 border markers in 17 communes and towns in the two districts of Huong Hoa and Dakrong of Quang Tri province. Over the past 5 years, "Border Classes" have been organized by border guards, attracting a large number of students to participate.
Open class at milestone
In recent years, border posts in Huong Hoa and Dakrong districts of Quang Tri province have actively promoted and mobilized people to participate in implementing Directive No. 01/CT-TTg, dated January 9, 2015, of the Prime Minister on organizing the movement "All people participate in protecting territorial sovereignty and national border security in the new situation", associated with the implementation of "All People's Border Day" and building a strong all-people national defense and people's security in border areas through many specific and practical actions.
Along with the implementation of Directive 01/CT-TTg is the "Border Lesson" model, organized by border posts in these two districts right at border markers, to educate students about patriotism, awareness of protecting territorial sovereignty and national border security.
A recent example is that, towards the 64th anniversary of the Vietnam Border Guard's Traditional Day (March 3, 1959 - March 3, 2023) and the 34th anniversary of the People's Border Guard Day (March 3, 1989 - March 3, 2023), Pa Nang Border Guard Station coordinated with Pa Nang Ethnic Boarding Secondary School (Pa Nang Commune, Dakrong District) to organize the program "Border Lesson" with the theme "My Fatherland's Border". The lesson was held at landmark 618, the Vietnam - Laos border.
The class was taught by Captain Nguyen Van Tam, Head of the Mass Mobilization Team of Pa Nang Border Guard Station. The students listened attentively to the "teacher" in green uniform, introducing the history of the formation of national border marker 618 and knowledge about the border and territory. The students also followed the soldiers to visit and experience border patrol. Many questions and concerns from the students were enthusiastically answered by Captain Tam and the border guards. Through this lesson, the students gained more understanding about the process of building and planting border markers, including the help of the local people, their grandparents and parents. This helped them foster their love for the country and awareness of protecting their villages and homeland borders.
In 2017, the La Lay International Border Guard Station coordinated with schools in Dakrong district to organize the first "Border Class". Since then, the unit has organized 56 classes, attracting thousands of students. Many of the children who participated in the first class are now young adults, becoming the village's shock force, actively working with border guards to patrol, prevent crime, and protect security and order at the border.
In Huong Hoa district, "Border lessons" are also regularly deployed by Thuan, Thanh, Huong Phung, Huong Lap, and Ba Tang Border Guard Stations at border markers...
Thuan Border Guard Station manages 13,288 km of border through Thuan and Tan Long communes of Huong Hoa district. The "Border Classes" of this Border Guard Station always attract a large number of students. The leaders of Thuan Border Guard Station affirmed that these classes are very practical. Thanks to seeing and hearing, the students can easily absorb and understand more clearly about the border dividing line between Vietnam and Laos; know about single and double markers..., thereby becoming more aware of their responsibility in protecting the national border sovereignty.

Every student will be a propagandist.
The teaching content of "Border Lesson" is carefully prepared by "teachers" in green uniforms to suit each age of the students. The communication is carried out in an easy-to-understand and vivid way through images, or field trips to the border, landmarks, markers, etc.
Many students who experienced this special and interesting lesson for the first time were very excited and filled with indescribable emotions. Ho Thi Phuong (student of grade 7C, Ba Tang High School - Middle School) said: "Through the introduction and answers from the border guards, we gained more knowledge, felt more proud and loved our country and homeland more". Meanwhile, Ho Van Tung (student of grade 7C, Ba Tang High School - Middle School) said: "The visual lessons at landmark 616 in my commune (Ba Tang commune) were really interesting. The lessons helped us realize our own responsibility and we will join hands with our parents and people in the village and commune to protect the landmark well".
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Binh Quy, Head of Ba Tang Border Guard Station, said that the "Border Lesson" was conducted directly at the border markers to help students in the mountainous area of Quang Tri equip themselves with useful knowledge about the border, gain a deeper understanding of national sovereignty, national borders, the meaning and importance of the border system and national border markers; and help them better understand the work of border management and protection. "This activity also contributes to fostering national pride and love for the homeland and country for the younger generation; so that in the future they will become good citizens, together with the Border Guard force, to perform well the task of firmly protecting territorial sovereignty, national border security, and building prosperous and happy villages," said Lieutenant Colonel Quy.
Colonel Le Van Phuong, Commander of the Quang Tri Border Guard, assessed that these special classes have become a bright spot in propaganda in the border area. "With the creativity and pioneering spirit of the youth, the units implementing the "Border Lesson" model always have creative forms to enrich the lectures, improve efficiency, thereby contributing to spreading love for the border. The important thing is that from the knowledge learned through the "Border Lesson", each student will be an active propagandist to convey knowledge about the border to their family and relatives" - Colonel Phuong affirmed.
Effective model
The "Border Lesson" model is one of the activities to concretize the program "Coordination to promote propaganda, dissemination, and legal education; prevention of social evils and crimes among students in border areas" between the Quang Tri Border Guard Command and the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province.
After more than 5 years of implementation, the model has been implemented by 16 units under the provincial Border Guard in coordination with agencies and units in the stationed area. Thereby, hundreds of lessons have been organized, attracting tens of thousands of students to participate.
