(CLO) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese affirmed that his country still maintains its stance in supporting a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, after US President Donald Trump suddenly announced plans to take over the Gaza Strip.
Speaking at a press conference on February 5, Prime Minister Albanese emphasized: "Australia's position remains the same this morning, remains the same as last year. The Australian government, on the basis of bipartisan consensus, supports the two-state solution."

This means that Australia continues to support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, coexisting peacefully with Israel within the framework of international agreements.
Albanese's comments came shortly after President Trump shocked the world with his plans to take over the Gaza Strip. "The United States will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will deal with it our own way," Trump said at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also suggested resettling Palestinians in neighboring countries, a proposal that was immediately met with strong opposition.
Mr. Trump's plan has caused an uproar in international public opinion. The Palestinian government immediately condemned it, calling it a violation of Palestinian sovereignty.
The United Nations was also quick to speak out, with Secretary-General António Guterres stressing that a two-state solution remains the only way to achieve lasting peace. Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) expressed concern that direct US intervention in Gaza could escalate the conflict.
It is still unclear whether the Washington administration will actually implement this plan, but it has increased diplomatic tensions between the parties involved and could significantly affect the peace process in the Middle East.
