According to information posted on UN News , the General Assembly passed the above Resolution with 124 votes in favor, 14 votes against and 43 abstentions.
Israel and the United States were among the countries that voted against the resolution entitled "Advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the legal consequences of Israel's policies and activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and the illegality of Israel's continued presence there."
The resolution demands that Israel "immediately end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory," and specifies that this must be completed within 12 months of the resolution's adoption.
The UN General Assembly also called on states to “take steps to halt the importation of goods originating from Jewish settlements, as well as the supply or transfer to Israel of arms, ammunition and related equipment, due to concerns that they may be used in the occupied Palestinian territory.”
The document, drafted by Palestine, is the first resolution officially submitted by the Palestinian Authority at the United Nations since it won a seat at General Assembly meetings and the right to propose draft resolutions.
The 79th session of the UN General Assembly passed the resolution, a political victory for Palestine as world leaders gather at the UN headquarters in New York next week for the UN High-Level Week.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 26, the same day as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Responding to the above resolution of the UN General Assembly, Reuters news agency reported that the Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement of protest.
Meanwhile, New Zealand, one of the countries that voted in favor, said its vote was essentially a signal of its strong support for international law and the need for a two-state solution.
“The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been going on for too long and the pain it has caused on both sides is immense. We have always said that a two-state solution is the only sustainable and just solution for Israelis and Palestinians,” New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said.
In developments related to the situation in the Middle East, on September 18, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made his 10th trip to the region since the conflict in Gaza broke out in October 2023.
In Egypt, Mr. Blinken reaffirmed that a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza would be the best way to prevent further violence in the Middle East and that the United States and regional mediators Egypt and Qatar would continue to pursue this goal.
The UN General Assembly is one of the six principal organs of the UN and is the only organ with representation from all 193 member states. The UN General Assembly has the power to discuss and make recommendations on matters within the scope of the Charter or any matter within the competence of UN organs, with the aim of promoting international cooperation on a global scale. |
