On August 3, Commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), General Michael Kurilla, traveled to the Middle East to mobilize a coalition to protect Israel from a potential attack from Iran that is expected to take place in the next few days.

General Michael Kurilla plans to visit Gulf countries, such as Jordan and Israel.
Kurilla's visit to the Middle East was planned before the recent flare-up in tensions between Israel, Iran and Hezbollah, but he will try to mobilize an international and regional coalition similar to the one that protected Israel from an Iranian attack in mid-April, according to US officials.
General Michael Kurilla is scheduled to visit Jordan and Israel, with the stop in Jordan being the most important given the country’s role in repelling the April 13 attacks.
Earlier on July 31, the Palestinian Hamas movement announced the death of its political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, due to an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran, where he had come to attend the inauguration of the new Iranian president. The movement blamed Israel and the United States for Haniyeh's death and vowed to respond.
In a related development, US and Israeli officials said Iran will attack Israeli territory on August 5 amid escalating conflicts.
US officials expect Iran's retaliation to be similar to the attack on Israel in mid-April, but potentially larger in scale, as Lebanon's Hezbollah movement could also join in the action.
Earlier, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said he had nothing to say about Haniyeh's death and dismissed Iran's accusations that the US and Israel were responsible. Israeli military officials, on the other hand, said they "do not respond to media reports" about the assassination of Haniyeh.
