Ground automation technology developed by Overland AI, a company based in Washington, USA, is promising to bring a revolution in the field of military transportation.
Startup Overland AI has just announced a groundbreaking technology that promises to revolutionize the field of military logistics. Developed by Overland AI, the SPARK system is equipped with LiDAR technology and high-resolution stereo cameras, allowing observation in dark, dusty, and stormy conditions. In addition, the system also integrates GPS, allowing operators to accurately track movements.
The company says the automation upgrade is accomplished by integrating its advanced OverDrive software with the existing hardware of any motor vehicle.
This solution shortens the path to achieving high automation capabilities without the lengthy procurement process that often accompanies the implementation of new automation systems.
“By integrating SPARK, the Army can rapidly transform existing equipment into autonomous ground vehicles at scale,” said Byron Boots, co-founder and CEO of Overland AI. “This instant deployment capability provides a critical tactical advantage in a battlefield that is changing by the minute.”
SPARK provides full autonomy for ground vehicles
In essence, SPARK is a “comprehensive automation toolkit” designed to turn any ground vehicle into a fully autonomous platform. Overland AI is focused on revolutionizing ground operations through advanced automation solutions.
The device integrates an ultra-compact computing module capable of processing sensor data in real time and is designed to fit neatly inside vehicles.
A notable advantage of SPARK is its wire-controlled system, which allows the vehicle to operate fully autonomously or remotely without losing manual control.
With its flexible design and easy integration, the system can be installed on most vehicles with minimal mechanical modifications.
In addition, SPARK continuously monitors vehicle status and transmits data to the controller to ensure the vehicle is always ready for operation.
In the modern battlefield where GPS signals can be disrupted and communications compromised, SPARK ensures secure and encrypted connectivity with Starlink, tactical mesh networks, LTE and WiFi in auto-PACE configuration.
Even in conflict zones, the system can transmit battlefield intelligence to command posts, helping military leaders make timely decisions.
In particular, SPARK's autonomous vehicle technology allows a single operator to operate multiple vehicles at the same time, helping to minimize risks and protect soldiers' lives on the battlefield.
Learn about Overland AI's OverDrive software
If Overland AI's SPARK system is adopted by the US Army, battlefield logistics could undergo a complete revolution.
The system has the potential to provide a "fire and forget" advantage in a combat zone, and could even be used to deliver explosive warheads to a designated target with precision.
According to Overland AI, the core of the system – OverDrive – is an intuitive command and control (C2) interface, designed to operate effectively in complex, random, and highly adversarial environments.
As a result, SPARK can operate without detailed maps and adjust vehicle speed to suit each mission.
Previously, on February 20, 2025, Overland AI announced the opening of the Overland AI Factory in South Seattle, USA, to expand large-scale production.
The plant is strategically located near Lewis-McChord, key military airfields and major seaports, optimizing the defense supply chain and accelerating the deployment of automated systems ready to serve military partners.
