With the desire to help teachers and schools better manage students when they participate in extracurricular activities, technician Nguyen Bao Nam, in charge of information technology at Vo Van Kiet High School, Ho Chi Minh City, wrote his own student management software, bringing many benefits to students and schools.

Holding a badge with a barcode printed on it, Tran Hoai Anh Bang, class 11A7, Vo Van Kiet High School, District 8, Ho Chi Minh City, wore a traditional Vietnamese dress to enter the school and walked to the supervisor's office to swipe his card. Just this simple operation has solved many steps in taking attendance and managing students.

Software written within 1 week

"On Happy Thursday, we can choose our own clothes and bags, we don't wear school uniforms or badges, but when we go to school, we don't have any inconvenience in taking attendance or other things. Because now my school has attendance cards, I just need to swipe the card and my data will be reported to my homeroom teacher and the school. I find this very convenient for me and the school" - Anh Bang excitedly said.

Anh Bang's feelings are also the feelings of many students at Vo Van Kiet High School since the school used the "Student Attendance" software written by IT technician Nguyen Bao Nam.

"The homeroom teachers and school administrators use the student management system to manage the time and number of students coming to school on a vibrant day like Happy Thursday. Student identification is easy even though on this day students do not wear uniforms or badges but can dress according to their personal preferences," commented Ms. Hong Anh, vice principal of Vo Van Kiet High School.

The "Student Attendance" software by technician Nguyen Bao Nam was launched in April 2024. "Our school organizes Happy Thursday, managing 1,860 students is not easy. The students are allowed to dress according to their preferences. If managed by traditional attendance, it will be very time-consuming and require a lot of human resources, and there may be strangers infiltrating the school, so I thought of writing student attendance software to help the school manage students more easily" - Mr. Nam said.

With the computer and available facilities at school, in just about a week of staying up late and waking up early, technician Bao Nam completed the "Student Attendance" software, scanning all data of 1,860 students of the school to help accurately identify students and classes.

However, the software at that time did not display the time students entered the school. Taking this feedback into account, Mr. Nam added a real-time display feature, making it easier for teachers to take attendance.

Now the software provides accurate information about the date and time students arrive at school, the number of students, and reports it to the homeroom teacher. The school board also knows this number immediately. Students and schools use the software without having to pay any fees.

Technician who loves teaching

Technician Bao Nam has worked at Vo Van Kiet High School for 5 years. He is in charge of the entire computer system, student computer room, office computers and the entire network system of the school.

Talking to us, Bao Nam said he is continuing to upgrade the software so that it can recognize students' faces, identify students in each class and notify parents.

The salary of school staff is low, in addition to information technology work, Nguyen Bao Nam is also in charge of many other areas such as managing boarding students to increase income.

However, when we asked if this "attendance software" could be sold because many schools need it, Mr. Nam refused: "I love students and want to contribute my efforts to bring practical benefits to students, teachers, schools and parents. I do this with absolutely no intention of selling, I just want to better serve the school's management work. I love teaching."

Previously, Nguyen Bao Nam was an IT technician at Toyota Vietnam, but because he loved teaching, he applied to be an IT teacher at an elementary school in Ho Chi Minh City.

"I graduated from a foreign university (USA) so I cannot work as an IT teacher at school. Therefore, I am currently content with working as a school technician and pursuing a job close to students, beside them," Nam shared.

Precious gift

Ms. Le Thi Hong Anh said that the student attendance software of technician Nguyen Bao Nam helps teachers and schools manage students more conveniently.

"The school is very grateful to Bao Nam for helping the school and teachers approach student management in this digital age. Our school does not have much budget for this work, so Bao Nam writing this management software is truly a precious gift for the school" - Ms. Hong Anh commented.
