Speaking at the ceremony, Editor-in-Chief of Tien Phong Newspaper Phung Cong Suong said: Looking back in time 53 years ago, the 81-day and night battle to protect the Ancient Citadel and Quang Tri town shocked the conscience of humanity around the world because of its brutality and destruction.
To maintain the Citadel and Quang Tri town for 81 days and nights, thousands of soldiers and people fought and heroically sacrificed, their blood and bones mixed into the soil and rivers, turning into grass and alluvium on the banks.
Today, being here, the place that witnessed the 81 days and nights of heroic history, in this sacred moment, we respectfully bow and light incense sticks, gently release fresh flowers, and flower lanterns to commemorate the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their youth for the Fatherland. May their souls rest in eternal peace. We also express our deep gratitude and share the loss with the families of the martyrs who have not yet found the remains of their children.
