Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên12/10/2023

THERE IS AN AFTER-SCHOOL SCHEDULE FOR EACH STUDENT

At the recent primary education conference organized by the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Lam Hong Lam Thuy, Head of the Primary Education Department, said that in reality, when surveying and understanding the situation in schools, there were stories of teachers letting parents choose subjects from the foreign language and information technology project (the project of the City People's Committee, the Ministry of Education and Training allows to include this foreign language and information technology subject in the 7-period/day timetable) and based on that to arrange classes. However, when it comes to subjects that are the needs, interests, physical education and sports abilities, and other activities of students, teachers have not yet obtained the full consent of parents, but still arrange classes.

"It is necessary to respect the organization of classes based on students' talents, abilities, interests, and strengths," said Ms. Thuy.

She emphasized that the school must survey all parents and must have a plan to organize other educational activities suitable for students. If any student does not participate in this club or this subject, then during that time, they can participate in other activities at that time frame. If students do not wish to participate in paid activities, the school must arrange for them to participate in other activities, which teachers do not have enough teaching hours to do, and do not charge a fee.

"With this content, the Department requests the Department of Education and Training of districts, towns, and Thu Duc City to review the timetable, check the school plan to see if the schools have properly collected opinions, respected the abilities, needs, and interests of students when calculating and arranging the timetable," added the Head of the Department's Primary Education Department.

Ms. Lam Hong Lam Thuy also emphasized: "If the school opens an after-school club (such as basketball, martial arts, dancing... - PV), organized after school hours for students from the time they leave school until their parents pick them up, this is the individual timetable for each student. These subjects cannot be included in the general timetable of each class, to avoid parents of students who do not study having the wrong schedule, taking the wrong class, or picking up the wrong child."

In response to this directive from the Department of Education and Training, Ms. Le Cam Tien, a parent of two children at Bui Van Ngu Primary School, Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the school had distributed a form to collect opinions on each voluntary subject such as international informatics, so that parents could register or not register and submit it. This form clearly stated that "parents and students register to participate in the ICDL digital student international standard informatics program on a completely voluntary basis". This parent also said that she had asked the teacher and was informed that other "voluntary" subjects would also have their own registration forms and would be sent to parents in turn.

Ms. K., a parent whose child studies at Luong Dinh Cua Primary School, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, also said that the homeroom teacher distributed questionnaires to collect opinions about "voluntary" subjects.

A parent whose child is in grade 3 at a primary school in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the school has adjusted the timetable compared to before. Voluntary periods are arranged in the last period of the day and left blank, so that students can fill in their own subjects. This means that each student will have a different timetable if the voluntary subjects are not the same.

Any student who does not take the classes will be arranged by the teacher to participate in other activities instead, such as reading books in the library, etc.

Check and conduct surprise inspections at schools

The leader of the Department of Education and Training of Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City said that he has directed schools to review the organization of teaching and learning of voluntary subjects. According to the Department of Education and Training of Binh Tan District, in addition to receiving reports from schools, the district will also organize inspection teams and make unannounced visits to grasp the actual situation to see how schools organize activities and organize timetables, etc.
