Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training receives feedback from students and parents about boarding meals
At the regular press conference on socio-economic situation organized by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee this afternoon, November 7, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training provided information related to the quality of boarding meals as well as the organization and arrangement of 6-period/session schedules at some schools in Ho Chi Minh City in recent times.
Accordingly, recently, students have continuously reported on the quality of boarding meals, including some meals that have received praise but also meals that have received many negative comments.
Regarding the organization of meals at boarding schools, the Department of Education and Training said that it has issued a document directing the Departments of Education and Training and principals to properly manage kitchens, canteens, and food services in schools. It requires educational institutions to seriously implement the strengthening of inspection, management, and supervision of the organization of school meals, food safety, proper nutrition, and environmental sanitation; divide the time for each student's meal reasonably; the dining area must be airy and clean; monitor the processing, serving, and cost of each student's daily meal; regularly monitor industrial catering facilities; strictly conduct self-inspections on food safety for kitchens and canteens in schools...
The Department of Education believes that there needs to be coordination between schools, families and society in ensuring the quality of meals for students. The Parents' Representative Board in the class and in the school should promote its role in coordinating with the school to take care of students' health; provide advice and suggestions to the school in organizing meals; and supervise the organization of meals and the quality of meals throughout the school year with the school.
The Department of Education and Training said it is ready to receive feedback from parents and students about the quality of meals at schools. It considers this a useful channel for the education sector to further improve inspection and supervision work, further improve the quality of organizing meals for students, and take care of students' health.
Students study 6 periods/session, Department of Education and Training directs immediate adjustment
In addition, according to the feedback from parents of students at Ho Van Thanh Primary School (District 12), the timetable is 6 periods/session. The school said that due to insufficient facilities, classes only study 1 session per day, so they had to arrange the number of periods like that and let students study on Saturdays as well. Allowing students, especially primary school students, to study 6 periods per session is against the regulations. Has the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City received this information and what solutions are there to reduce the pressure on students?
In response to this information, the Department of Education and Training responded: At the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, the Department of Education and Training of District 12 requested all primary schools to submit their timetables for inspection and approval. Accordingly, Ho Van Thanh Primary School arranged lessons in the General Education Program and lessons implemented according to the school program including: Information Technology according to international standards, English for foreigners, teaching English through math and science, life skills, Stem education... with the duration shown on the timetable being 6 lessons/session.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training affirmed that the arrangement of 6 periods/session is not in accordance with regulations and has directed the principal to adjust the timetable, clearly separating the periods belonging to the current general education program and the periods implemented according to the school program according to the needs of parents. At the same time, it directed to arrange these periods at the beginning or end of the school day to make it convenient for parents to pick up and drop off their children if the students do not need to participate. And from November 2, Ho Van Thanh Primary School has implemented the new timetable.
