(Fatherland) - On December 22, the Institute of Ethnology - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Sports of Quang Binh province organized a workshop "Chut ethnic costumes: Needs, approaches and shaping".
The scientific workshop with the theme: "Chut ethnic costumes: Needs, approaches and shaping" aims to report the results of the topic and consult with managers, scientists, units and related localities, especially the consensus of representatives of the Chut ethnic group on the models of community costumes that have been built by the research team from the needs, ideas and proposals of cultural subjects through survey trips in Bo Trach, Minh Hoa and Tuyen Hoa districts, Quang Binh province.
Overview of the workshop "Chut ethnic costumes: Needs, approaches and shaping"
The Chut people are one of the ethnic groups with a small population of less than 10,000 people, residing mainly in the limestone mountains in the west of Quang Binh province and a mountainous part of Ha Tinh province. The Chut people have 5 ethnic groups, including Sach, May, Ma Lieng, Ruc and A Rem. There are similarities and cultural exchanges between the local ethnic groups and with other ethnic groups.
The traditional costumes of the Chut people include: Shirts and loincloths made from forest bark, forest leaves, or some animal skins. Later, the Chut people used costumes made from fabrics from neighboring ethnic groups. Currently, most of the Chut people wear costumes like the Kinh people. In community activities, the Chut people also use traditional costumes of some other ethnic minorities. Therefore, the Chut people want to have their own costumes like other ethnic groups.
One of the designs of Chut ethnic costume in Quang Binh is introduced.
During the process of survival, many cultural elements of the Chut people have been lost, including their costumes. The Chut people are the only group among the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam that do not have costumes that reflect their own cultural identity.
At the workshop, researchers presented and discussed to clarify the contents of building costumes bearing the identity of the Chut ethnic group; scientific basis and approach in shaping the Chut ethnic group's costumes... Studies show that in the past, the traditional costumes of the Chut people included shirts and loincloths made from forest bark, forest leaves, or some animal skins.
Through the development process, the Chut people have used woven costumes borrowed from neighboring ethnic groups such as the Viet - Muong group (through the Nguon group's costumes), the Tay - Thai group (through the Lao ethnic costumes), the Mon - Khmer group (through the Khua and Ma Coong group costumes)...
At the workshop, researchers, designers, and sample producers introduced in detail 3 traditional costumes of the Chut people based on the needs and aspirations of the people, in accordance with the ethnic nuances and actual conditions. These costumes were surveyed and received high consensus from the Chut ethnic people living in the 3 districts of Bo Trach, Minh Hoa and Tuyen Hoa (Quang Binh).
At this workshop, the designers introduced 3 designs of Chut ethnic costumes after surveying, researching, and directly collecting opinions from people in districts where Chut ethnic people live in Quang Binh.
According to the designers, these costume designs are based on 5 decorative colors, which are the cultural characteristics, customs, tastes, and daily activities of the Chut people. Many representatives of the Chut people in some localities in Quang Binh discussed and gave their opinions on the traditional costumes of the Chut, which must be uniform, harmonious, and aesthetically pleasing. In addition, they must show regional characteristics and be convenient for community activities...
It is known that the results achieved in the process of researching and designing the costumes of the Chut ethnic group in Quang Binh province will contribute to implementing the State's policies and orientations on cultural equality among ethnic groups, on preserving and promoting traditional cultural values of ethnic groups in general, on "Restoring, preserving and developing the traditional cultural identity of ethnic minorities with small populations" in particular and especially contributing to raising ethnic self-awareness, arousing national pride and self-respect of the Chut people - an ethnic group considered "disadvantaged" in the Vietnamese national - ethnic community.
