Thailand and Vietnam were equalized 1-1 by Laos in the second half of the opening match of Group C of the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship.
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan leads Vietnam to the U23 Southeast Asian tournament, with 16 out of 23 players from the U21 age group. VFF does not place too much emphasis on this tournament, as Vietnam is aiming for a more important task, the U23 Asian qualifiers in September 2023 under Philippe Troussier. But coach Hoang Anh Tuan still aims to bring Vietnam to the U23 Southeast Asian final.
Vietnam is in Group C with Laos and the Philippines. In the opening match, Laos drew 2-2 with the Philippines despite having an extra player. Vietnam will play Laos at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 20 at Rayong Stadium in Thailand.
The tournament consists of 10 teams, divided into three groups, with Group A having four teams. The top three teams in each group and the second-placed team with the highest record will advance to the semi-finals. If Vietnam beats Laos, they only need to draw with the Philippines in the final round to advance. If they lose to Laos, Vietnam will not be able to top the group and will have to compare results with the second-placed teams in Groups A and B.
Vietnam will play the final group stage match against the Philippines at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22.
