Selecting organizations and individuals to register to implement the Project "Testing lines and building asexual seed gardens of black canarium trees based on selected varieties"

There are 2 units registered to implement the Project, including the Institute of Forest Ecology and Environment Research and the Center for Training and Research on Crops and Livestock under Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry.

According to the explanatory report of the two units, the Project "Testing clones and building asexual seed garden of black Canarium nigrum (Canarium nigrum Dai & Yakovl) in Bac Kan province based on selected varieties" is inherited from the results of the Project on selecting and propagating black Canarium trees with high yield and good quality in Bac Kan province. The project will be implemented from June 2025 to June 2030 with the goal of proactively providing good seed sources, providing stable and long-term supply for black Canarium development, contributing to improving income and living standards for forest growers in Bac Kan province. The specific goal is to test 20 black Canarium clones from the results of the previous project; build 2 hectares of asexual seed garden from recognized varieties.

The novelty of the project registered by the Forest Ecological Environment Research Institute is that the testing of varieties and the construction of asexual seed gardens are carried out for the first time for black canarium trees in Bac Kan province, which will be the only source of improved varieties in the province at present. The model of testing varieties and seed gardens is applied according to Vietnamese standards. In terms of technology level, the varieties after testing have higher genetic quality than the temporary varieties.

For the Center for Training - Research on Plant and Animal Breeding, the unit registering to implement the Project must ensure that at least 3 clones of black canarium trees are selected for good growth and development; flowering and fruiting are 10% higher than the remaining lines. The grafted black canarium trees grow well, evenly, and have a more balanced canopy than the same type of plantation in the area; at least 50% of the trees flower, 20% of the trees produce fertile seeds.

After studying the documents and listening to the explanatory report, the Council members requested the unit registering to implement the Project to clarify some contents regarding the testing method, monitoring area; time of conducting research, testing... The Council members said that the final result must have a product of 2 hectares of asexual nursery from varieties recognized by competent authorities, however, both units have not yet submitted any content requesting recognition...

The Council members assessed that both units had provided specific research objectives and methods. However, based on the project registration documents and required objectives, the Council members assessed that both units had not met the requirements and objectives of the province. The Standing Office of the Provincial Science and Technology Council (Department of Science and Technology) will continue to extend the deadline for receiving documents to select the implementing unit in the coming time./.
