The exhibition aims to restore and preserve ancient folk art values through a harmonious combination of cultural currents. With 120 folk paintings on lacquer, created by artists from Latoa Indochine, the exhibition “The Road” brings art lovers a new and creative perspective on this traditional painting genre.
At the same time, it contributes to developing an ancient culture to a new level, blending the simple folk breath in the modern, progressive flow.
With the view of "Going to the end of communication, you will meet modernity", La Toa is a project to revive traditional crafts of the nation that are gradually fading away, aiming to bring traditional products closer to the people and international friends.
The Project's goal is to restore, meaning to restore the soul, the quintessence of expression, the spirit and national spirit from ancient times to the present without forgetting to harmoniously combine cultural flows to create traditional products with the beauty of modernity.
Encountered in the exhibition are mascots that breathe life into folk paintings such as Red Tiger, Cat Muop, Pig Dan,... to stories passed down through generations such as Thach Sanh, Kim Van Kieu story, Truc Lam Dai Si xuat son do,... all carrying the characteristics of that period. Each folk painting, whether it is a mascot, a slice of a story or a folk panorama, exudes spiritual meaning and at the same time brings viewers into a space of nostalgia for a world that was once very lively and colorful through the art of re-engraved on lacquer material in a sophisticated and sharp way. The images in the engraved lacquer paintings are all sharp, deep and when observed closely, you will see layers of meticulously polished colors. All of these things help folk paintings become more beautiful, modern, luxurious, and the cultural and artistic value is also raised to a new level. The characteristic of engraved lacquer paintings is that after each layer comes a grinding step.
Each work is first sketched by the artist, using a concave carving tool to create black lines like traditional folk paintings. Then, using then, cockroach wings to paint lacquer, gold leaf, silver leaf, etc., each color is a layer, after each layer is a polishing step. The entire process for a work must be up to 15 - 20 steps and takes about 45 - 60 days to complete. This is a very meaningful event that contributes significantly to the Vietnamese Folk Painting Conservation Project. At the same time, the exhibition also inspires art lovers with new emotions, emotions to continue their creative journeys.
