In the first half of 2023, Vietnamese cinema made a miracle when it reached a total revenue of more than 1,000 billion VND in just 5 months. However, the picture of Vietnamese cinema in the second half of the year was gloomy. From June to August, no domestic projects were released, leaving foreign films to languish in theaters.
Therefore, all attention is focused on 2 projects scheduled for release in the second half of the year. Those are action movies. Anonymous and drama Southern forest land .
Kieu Minh Tuan changes his image
In theaters August 25, Anonymous is a movie directed by Tran Trong Dan. Before that, he was famous as a producer, having made many movies such as The house in the alley (2012), Tender (2015), Female tycoon (2016),…
The project is expected because it chooses the action genre, promising to achieve high revenue when released in theaters, especially after the resounding success of Flip Side 6: The Fateful Ticket (Directed by Ly Hai). Not to mention, the film also brings together a famous cast, especially the main role belongs to Kieu Minh Tuan.
In the film, the 1988-born star plays a man who used to be a gangster. After losing his memory, he hides from the gangsters and makes a living as a manual laborer. However, an incident occurs that forces the character to set out to find his wife's stepdaughter, who is currently missing for unknown reasons.
This is not the first time Kieu Minh Tuan has acted in an action movie. In 2013, he played a small role in Dust of Cho Lon but the film was banned for many reasons. After that, the star continued to gain experience with action scenes in 798Ten (2018), Hundred billion key (2022).
However, Kieu Minh Tuan shared that it took him nearly half a year to research the character and prepare for the role. Right from the first images, he surprised everyone with his rugged appearance. To play the role of a gangster, the actor did not hesitate to grow long hair, lose weight and constantly sunbathe to have dark skin.
Besides Kieu Minh Tuan, the film also features two famous faces, Mac Van Khoa and Quoc Truong. However, the duo has not changed much in appearance compared to their co-stars. From what the producer announced, it is likely that Mac Van Khoa will continue to be the comedic factor, while Quoc Truong will play the villain.
Currently, the crew has not revealed much information about the film as well as the roles of other actors, especially the female faces. That helps the project to somewhat create curiosity with the public.
Can Tran Thanh overcome prejudice?
Release date set for October 20, Southern forest land is also a project that many audiences are waiting for. The work is directed by Nguyen Quang Dung, marking his return after the success of Blood Moon Party (2020) - grossed 175 billion VND, ranked 7th in the list of highest-grossing Vietnamese films of all time.
This is an adaptation of the famous novel of the same name by writer Doan Gioi. Previously, the story was brought to the small screen in 1997, directed by Nguyen Vinh Son. The TV series was very successful, becoming a childhood memory for many viewers, turning the male lead Hung Thuan into a child star loved by the whole country.
The film is set in a chaotic time when the French colonialists returned to invade the South. An, an orphan boy, decides to set out to find his father across the six southern provinces, with the help of a few companions. Through that, the film depicts the simple, honest life of the villagers in the Southern land.
Nguyen Quang Dung’s reputation is a guarantee for the work. Moreover, the film project is mostly noticed thanks to the famous cast including Tran Thanh, Mai Tai Phen, Tuan Tran, Hong Anh… However, the acting and appearance of the young faces make many people doubt the quality of the film.
In particular, Tran Thanh attracted attention when he invested in the project and played the role of Uncle Ba Phi. Previously, this character was loved thanks to the acting of artist Mac Can in the TV version. Therefore, the decision to choose Tran Thanh for the role immediately caused controversy.
Most of the audience was skeptical because Uncle Ba Phi was an old man. Previously, Tran Thanh had aged himself to play the role of a father in Godfather (2021) but lacks authenticity. Not to mention that over the years, his acting and character handling have received mixed opinions, some praising and some criticizing.
Therefore, many audiences are skeptical and worried that Tran Thanh will not be able to overcome the huge shadow of Mac Can, which will affect the entire project.
In addition to the two works mentioned above, there are also a number of Vietnamese films that are in the final stages of completion and have not yet announced their release dates. Notably, there is the project The Last Wife Directed by Victor Vu, starring Kaity Nguyen, it has attracted attention since the first information was released.
Some other films are also of interest such as Claws (Directed by Le Thanh Son), Tomorrow (Tran Thanh), Tet in hell village (Tran Huu Tan),… However, all are in the production and post-production process, so it may not be until early 2024 that they will be released to the audience.
