(CLO) Both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered important speeches to their respective people on New Year's Eve 2025.

"Now, on the eve of the New Year, we look to the future. We believe that everything will be fine and we will move forward," the Russian president declared in his traditional New Year's speech.

Mr Putin almost always greets Russians on New Year's Day from the Kremlin. However, in 2022 - the year of the start of the special military operation in Ukraine - he spoke from the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don.

In his speech this year, Mr Putin said that although the past year was “filled with many important and historically significant events”, Russians could still “set ambitious goals and achieve them” by uniting.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in World War II, as well as to honor Russian soldiers and commanders who are fighting today to ensure "lasting peace and security for our people", 2025 has been declared the Year of Defender of the Fatherland in Russia.

“I wish prosperity and happiness to every home, every family and our beloved Russia. When we are united, everything is possible. Happy New Year, dear friends! Happy 2025!”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late Tuesday that no one could gift peace to his country, but he believed the United States would stand by Kiev in its 34-month war with Russia.

In a 21-minute New Year's video message to his compatriots, Mr. Zelenskyy also said that only a strong Ukraine can ensure peace and gain respect around the world.

He recalled conversations with outgoing US President Joe Biden, President-elect Donald Trump and “all our supporters in the United States”. He stressed: “I have no doubt that the new US President wants and will be able to bring peace…”.

The Biden administration announced $2.5 billion in aid to Ukraine just before the new year, as well as a series of previous quick aid packages due to fears that the incoming Trump administration would cut support for Kiev.

Finally, Mr. Zelenskyy said that over the past year, Ukraine has launched an offensive in the Kursk region, carried out drone strikes on distant Russian targets, and developed domestically produced drones and other weapons.

“Every day of the coming year, I and all of us must fight for Ukraine to be strong,” he said. “Only such a Ukraine will be respected and listened to – both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.”
