DTO - The history of the formation and management of Tram Chim National Park over the past 40 years is a story of fire. Sometimes fire destroys and in many cases fire helps regenerate.
This morning, I was very happy to directly join the rangers of Dong Thap province in actively burning grass in area A1 of Tram Chim National Park. This time, fire was used as a tool, a method of ecosystem management and restoration.
The area burned on March 28, 2025 at Tram Chim is a grassland that has been continuously flooded for the past 15 years. The layer of vegetation and organic debris accumulated over time is very thick. Birds and many other creatures cannot use this place as a habitat. The layer of vegetation debris is also a huge source of flammable material, which can cause destructive fires.
In December 2024, Tram Chim National Park carried out water regulation according to scientific design. This area was dry for the first time in 15 years, creating conditions for proactive grass burning this morning.
Burning the accumulated vegetation residue over many years will help regenerate new vegetation, create more food and help animals access the soil environment. Burning also removes the remaining residue, reducing the risk of forest fires. Dong Thap forest rangers are very professional and highly skilled in proactive burning.
I am also happy that this morning's work is a direct result of the Sarus Crane restoration program in Tram Chim National Park. It shows that we are not just raising a few cranes, but in fact the program is restoring the entire Tram Chim wetland ecosystem, a precious remaining model of the ancient Dong Thap Muoi region.
