Bedwetting is a condition of uncontrolled urination, common in young children, but sometimes it is also a warning sign of certain diseases.
Bedwetting, also known as urinary incontinence, is a condition of loss of bladder control, common in children under 3 years old due to their weak bladder control ability. This is a normal phenomenon, parents do not need to worry too much. However, according to Dr. Nguyen Hoang Duc, Head of the Department of Urology, Center for Nephrology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, bedwetting can sometimes be a warning sign of a disease, so although parents do not need to worry too much, they should not be subjective if their children experience this condition.
Bedwetting may be abnormal if: it lasts for more than 6 months, especially in children over 5 years old, because more than 90% of children at this age can control their urination. In addition, parents should also pay attention if the child was previously able to control urination but suddenly wets the bed.
Pathological bedwetting can be related to abnormalities in the structure and size of organs in the child's urinary system, especially the bladder. In addition, bedwetting can also occur due to diseases that cause inflammation in the genital area such as balanitis in boys and vaginitis in girls, genital fungus, small bladder, overactive bladder, endocrine disorders, sickle cell anemia... Mental health problems such as unresolved inhibitions or problems can also cause bedwetting in children.

Doctor Hoang Duc said, bedwetting in children is treated in the following way:
Adjusting children's activities and habits
Parents should limit their children's water or milk intake close to bedtime, which helps reduce urine production and the risk of bedwetting. In their daily diet, avoid hot or spicy foods that can irritate the child's bladder.
Parents need to let their children urinate before going to bed. Then, about 30 - 60 minutes before the time when the child usually wets the bed, wake the child up to urinate again, this will limit the condition of urinary incontinence in children. Children should wear comfortable clothes, especially when going to bed to avoid clothes touching the genitals, stimulating the bladder leading to uncontrolled urine leakage.
Teach children how to control their bladder such as: urinating at a fixed time, every 2-3 hours; relaxing the pelvic floor muscles, avoiding movements that put pressure on this area; urinating twice in one urination, this is a method of emptying the bladder, mainly applied to children with an underactive bladder, vesicoureteral reflux.
Conservative treatment with oral medication
This method is applied to severe cases, children do not respond to methods of changing lifestyle habits and bladder control training. The drugs used in treatment are usually bladder nerve inhibitors and urinary secretion inhibitors.

Doctor Hoang Duc recommends that parents should stay calm and not scold their children when they wet the bed. Although it is not a complicated disease that is life-threatening, this condition greatly affects the child's psychology. Parents' scolding can seriously affect the child's perception of himself, thinking that bedwetting is a wrong behavior, creating a sense of guilt in the child, making the child become self-conscious and withdrawn. When the child's psychology is affected, bedwetting will become more serious.
