After the match between Persib Bandung and Persija Jakarta, Indonesian fans caused chaos at Jalak Harupat Stadium. The ugly scene erupted in the stands, starting with spectators throwing objects, then storming onto the field. Security personnel became the target of the crowd's anger and some were even beaten. The initial cause was determined to be a member of the stadium's organizing committee insulting and harassing a female fan. In addition, the referee's decisions in this match also made fans unhappy.
According to Bola Times , 13 security personnel were seriously injured in the riot, with eight of them being treated at the Otto Iskandar Dinata (Otista) local hospital in Bandung Regency. Meanwhile, players from both teams as well as the referee were lucky to escape the incident.
By the afternoon of September 24, the victims' conditions had been revealed. Mr. Yani Sumpena - Director of Otto Iskandar Dinata Hospital shared: "A total of 8 people had to be hospitalized urgently. Of which 7 people received first aid and are currently being monitored. If nothing happens, they can be discharged. However, one person suffered a serious head injury and was forced to stay in the hospital for further monitoring. Our doctors predict that this person will need a long time to be treated."
Fans flooded the field, breaking the security fence.
Meanwhile, Otto Iskandar Dinata, deputy director of the hospital, gave more details about the victims' condition: "Eight people were admitted to the hospital at different times. Some arrived at 18:38, then some at 20:00 and some at 23:30. From these statistics, we can see that the riot lasted for quite a long time.
Hospitals always have doctors and nurses on duty and pray that nothing unfortunate happens. The riots on the pitch in Indonesia are so scary that we have to prepare the emergency room carefully.
Persib Bandung Club President Takes Responsibility
Following the riot, President of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir announced that a full investigation would be conducted into the incident. In addition to the penalties imposed on the night of September 23, PSSI plans to impose additional penalties on fans and the organizers of Jalak Harupat Stadium for allowing the riot to occur.
The Indonesian national championship often makes fans and players afraid because of riots.
Persib Bandung Club President Tobias Ginanjar said he is ready to take responsibility if any of his members are proven to have committed violence in the fan riot. At the same time, he also strongly condemned the violence on the pitch in the Indonesian national championship.
“I hope all the victims affected by yesterday’s incident will recover quickly and find healing. Violence cannot be justified for any reason. I will always stand by the victims because we agree that there should be no violence or harassment in the stadium,” said Tobias Ginanjar.
Yesterday's incident may have come from unresolved conflicts and frustrations in the past. If we had fought violence with violence again, who knows what tragedy would have occurred."
