Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets with Indonesian President Joko Widodo

On the afternoon of January 12, at the Government Headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is on a state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his pleasure at meeting the Indonesian President again; affirming that the President's visit this time has special significance, creating new momentum for the relationship between the two countries after more than 10 years of establishing the Strategic Partnership and towards the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations (1955-2025).

The Prime Minister congratulated Indonesia on its many important achievements in national construction and development during President Joko Widodo's two terms; wished Indonesia a successful organization of the upcoming General Election, continued prosperity, and the goal of becoming a developed country on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding (1945-2045), with an increasingly high position in the region and the world.

The Indonesian President expressed his pleasure to visit Vietnam again and meet Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; highly appreciated Vietnam's remarkable development in recent years, becoming one of the high-growth economies; affirmed that Vietnam is an important and strategic partner of Indonesia in the region.

The Indonesian President also highly appreciated the important and substantive results of the exchanges and contacts with Vietnamese senior leaders and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

The two leaders highly appreciated the strong and dynamic development of the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Indonesia in various fields. Strategic trust has been increasingly enhanced through regular delegation exchanges and high-level contacts. Cooperation in the fields of security and defense, maritime cooperation, agriculture, fisheries, education and training, tourism, and people-to-people exchange has achieved many positive results.

Economic and trade cooperation is a bright spot in the relationship between the two countries. In the first 11 months of 2023, investment capital from Indonesia to Vietnam increased by 37%, with a total newly registered capital of more than 1 billion USD. Indonesia maintained its position as Vietnam's third largest trading partner and Vietnam was Indonesia's fourth largest trading partner in ASEAN with a total trade turnover in the first 11 months of 2023 reaching nearly 13 billion USD.

Based on the achievements, to create new momentum for bilateral relations, the two sides agreed to consider soon bringing the Vietnam - Indonesia Strategic Partnership to a new height. The two sides agreed to continue to increase delegation exchanges and contacts at high and all levels; effectively implement bilateral cooperation mechanisms, high-level agreements, and signed documents; promptly develop an Action Program for the period 2024 - 2028 in accordance with the new situation.

The two sides agreed to strive to soon increase bilateral trade turnover to 15 billion USD and higher at 18 billion USD before 2028; facilitate and encourage businesses of the two countries to invest in each other's markets; expand cooperation to new areas such as artificial intelligence, digital economy, green economy, renewable energy, investment in developing electric vehicle ecosystems and electric vehicle batteries; expand cooperation programs within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JTEP); strengthen cooperation in the field of Halal; strengthen cooperation in food security, and study and promote the signing of a rice trade agreement.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Indonesian President also affirmed to strengthen cooperation in other important areas such as defense, security, maritime cooperation; coordinate to address common security challenges at sea; cooperate in fisheries and aquaculture; coordinate to limit illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities; promote cooperation in education, training and tourism; strengthen connectivity, increase the frequency of direct commercial flights, promote people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between localities of the two countries.

The two leaders also discussed regional situations and concerns; agreed to continue to coordinate and support each other at multilateral organizations; strengthen cooperation, consolidate solidarity, central role and common views of ASEAN on regional security issues, including the East Sea issue; and support Laos in successfully fulfilling its responsibility as ASEAN Chair in 2024.

The Prime Minister proposed that Indonesia send a high-level representative and support Vietnam in successfully organizing the ASEAN Future Forum in 2024 on rapid, sustainable, people-centered development to contribute to building a resilient and sustainable ASEAN Community.
