On December 26, 2024, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam signed Decision No. 1533/QD-CTN to confer the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces on the Ho Chi Minh City armed forces for their outstanding achievements in preventing and fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, building the People's Army, strengthening national defense, and contributing to the cause of building and defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stated that in recent days, the entire Party, people and army have organized many meaningful and practical activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army and the 35th anniversary of National Defense Day.
After 80 years of building, fighting and growing, our army is truly a heroic army of a heroic nation "Loyal to the Party, filial to the people, ready to fight and sacrifice for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, for socialism. Every mission is completed, every difficulty is overcome, every enemy is defeated".
Along with the process of building and growing of the Vietnam People's Army, the Ho Chi Minh City armed forces have also gone through nearly 80 years of glorious fighting, embellishing the revolutionary tradition of the heroic land of Saigon - Gia Dinh - Ho Chi Minh City.
From the beginning with a few hundred volunteer soldiers, equipped with rudimentary weapons, the City's armed forces have gone through the process of fighting, maturing and developing into one of the main and core forces of the revolutionary movement, together with the army and people of the South and the whole country, successfully completing the arduous long-term resistance war with place names such as: "Eighteen villages of betel gardens", "Lang Le, Bau Co, Vuon Thom, Ba Vu", "Cu Chi land of steel and copper walls", "Rung Sac"... full of feats of arms and have entered the history of the country as well as the legend of the nation.
After the country's reunification, the armed forces of Ho Chi Minh City have made efforts with the people to overcome the consequences, heal the wounds of war, develop the economy, culture, society and fulfill the country's noble international obligations. With an iron spirit and high determination, officers and soldiers have overcome all difficulties, hardships, challenges and sacrifices, creating the tradition of "Infinite loyalty - Resilience - Solidarity and discipline - Dynamism and creativity - Determination to fight and win" and were honored to be twice awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and State.
Promoting the glorious tradition of the City named after Uncle Ho, in recent years, all levels, sectors, armed forces and people of Ho Chi Minh City have united, joined hands, strived and achieved many positive results in all fields; promoted the role of the city as an economic locomotive, a major center of culture, education, science and technology and international integration, making an important contribution to the overall development of the country. In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City's GRDP growth is estimated at 7.17% and budget revenue exceeds VND 500,000 billion, accounting for about 24% of the total budget revenue of the country, creating momentum, creating force, creating position to prepare with the whole country to enter a new era.
Among those achievements are the efforts and contributions of the City's armed forces, notably always upholding the revolutionary spirit of "forgetting oneself for the country, serving the people", proactively and actively advising Party committees and authorities at all levels to lead and direct the excellent completion of military and defense tasks.
Synchronously implement solutions to improve overall quality and combat strength; be a bright spot, model, and core in building a profound and extensive national defense associated with a comprehensive people's security posture and a solid "people's hearts posture".
Do a good job in mass mobilization work, actively participate in economic, cultural and social development; take the lead in preventing and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, epidemics, rescue, etc., contributing to maintaining local stability, creating a favorable environment for local development.
"In particular, in the recent fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, you have thoroughly grasped the motto 'Fighting the epidemic like fighting the enemy'; putting the lives and health of the people first and foremost; determining that 'helping the people is the heart's command' of the officers and soldiers. The City's armed forces are the support in the hearts of the people, responsible and loyal to the people in difficult times," the Prime Minister emotionally expressed.
The Ho Chi Minh City armed forces have worked side by side with the police and medical forces, both training and being ready to fight, and actively and proactively advising the Party Committee and the government to lead and direct the work of preventing, combating and overcoming the consequences of the pandemic; maximizing the combined strength and mobilizing all resources to help the people with the spirit of "Fastest, most creative, most numerous, most effective". "I was very moved when the people said 'we are alive, my people' when welcoming the army, police and medical forces", the Prime Minister expressed.
Cadres, soldiers, militia and self-defense forces of the Ho Chi Minh City armed forces have not been afraid of difficulties, hardships and dangers to fight on the front line against the epidemic; the spirit of dedication and selflessness of cadres and soldiers of the City's armed forces on the front line of COVID-19 prevention and control is a vivid demonstration of the tradition of "for the country, for the people", "loyalty and devotion" of the heroic army; contributing to shining the noble qualities and personalities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers".
The armed forces of the whole country, including the City's armed forces, have played a pivotal role in rapidly transforming the state of epidemic prevention under the leadership of the Party, the participation of the entire political system, the participation of people and businesses, and the support and cooperation of international friends.
"We cannot and will never forget the days of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic by the entire Party, the entire army, and the entire people, especially the armed forces and medical forces of Ho Chi Minh City - the city named after great Uncle Ho," the Prime Minister emphasized.
With the above outstanding achievements, the City's armed forces are honored and proud to receive the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces for the third time, awarded by the Party, State and people. This is a noble award, demonstrating the attention and recognition of the Party, State and people for the great contributions and dedication; especially the will, determination, determination and noble sacrifice of the officers and soldiers of the City's armed forces and medical forces.
