Although the models have not developed as strongly as in some other localities in the province, gradually grasping the market demand, many farmers in Vinh Linh district have invested in growing commercial flowers to supply during Tet. In which, the largest scale is currently the flower garden of Mr. Le Van Phong (born in 1979), in Lai Binh village, Vinh Chap commune. For the past 10 years, Mr. Phong has had an additional income of about 250 million VND/flower crop.

In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin, Mr. Phong and his workers focused on taking care of and preparing to sell over 2,000 flower pots and 100,000 ground-grown flower plants that were planted many months ago on a flower garden of over 1.5 hectares. Starting to learn and experiment with flower growing in 2014, over 10 years, Mr. Phong has gained a lot of experience in growing and caring for flowers that are popular in the market during Tet such as: apricot, chrysanthemum, peony, jade grass...
Thanks to that, his flower garden developed well. It is known that in the first 3 years, Mr. Phong only planted a few hundred flower pots, mainly chrysanthemums, imported from Da Lat city. The production process showed positive results, he gradually expanded the area, molded pots himself, propagated from tissue culture plants, increased the number of flowers and types of flowers grown on a large scale.
Mr. Phong shared: “I find that growing flowers to sell during Tet does not cost too much, like my flower garden, so far I have invested about 250 million VND. Growing flowers is not too difficult, just pay attention to choosing quality seeds, planting and caring for them properly, and paying attention to preventing pests and diseases.
Pay special attention, depending on the weather, humidity, light to calculate, adjust the planting time, fertilize, water, prune branches, pick leaves... suitable for the tree to bloom on Tet holiday, even and beautiful flowers are easy to sell and the selling price is also higher.
With the current quantity of flowers in the garden, Mr. Phong plans to sell 70% to traders in the province and Quang Binh province according to pre-orders around December 20 of the lunar calendar. He will transport the remaining 30% to display and retail directly at the Vinh Linh District Spring Flower Fair.
According to Mr. Phong's calculations, the selling price of flowers ranges from 150,000 VND - 2 million VND/flower pot depending on the type, he earns over 500 million VND, after deducting expenses, the profit alone is about 250 million VND. Mr. Phong's flower garden is also creating regular jobs for 5 local workers.
Chairman of Vinh Chap Commune Farmers' Association Le Duc Quang Huy said: "Vinh Chap Commune does not have many advantages in developing crops due to the hilly soil conditions. The model of growing commercial flowers of Mr. Le Van Phong's household is a new direction, bringing higher income than growing other crops, more importantly, it shows stability because the output of commercial flowers is quite favorable most years.
Considering the effectiveness of the model, the Vinh Chap Commune Farmers' Association has also advised the Commune People's Committee to create conditions for Mr. Phong's family to rent land as a site to develop the flower growing area. In the coming time, the Vinh Chap Commune Farmers' Association will continue to support and encourage households in need to learn, aiming to replicate the model, promote conversion, diversify crops, and increase income for rural workers in Vinh Chap.
The model of farmers in localities in the province investing in growing commercial flowers on a large scale has also contributed to supplying local flowers for the Tet market, reducing some of the costs of importing flowers from other provinces and cities. This has brought more joy to flower growers, flower traders and people buying flowers every Tet holiday.
