Ho Chi Minh City 10th grade valedictorian overcomes failure in excellent student exam

Vu Ngoc Bich, the valedictorian of the 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City, said she learned perseverance and determination from singer Son Tung after failing in the selection round for the English gifted student team.

With 9.25 - the highest score in Literature and two 10s in Math and English, Vu Ngoc Bich, a student at Le Anh Xuan Secondary School, Tan Phu District, is the valedictorian of the 10th grade public exam in Ho Chi Minh City.

"When the score appeared on the screen, I screamed with joy," Ngoc recalled the feeling of receiving the results on the morning of June 20.

Before that, looking at the exam answers, Ngoc was confident that she could get a 10 in Math and Foreign Language, but only hoped for an 8 in Literature. The score of 9.25 was much better than expected, making her and her family unable to believe their eyes when they checked the results. Bich said her parents even asked if she had written the correct registration number and advised her to check at another address to be sure.

At the end of 8th grade, Bich was selected to be part of the school's English team, but in 9th grade, she failed the selection round to compete at the district and city levels. This failure, according to Bich, was the motivation for her to try harder.

The female student said she learned perseverance and determination when pursuing her goals from her idol, singer Son Tung. According to her, for a long time since starting his singing career, Son Tung was little known, but he gradually proved himself through each musical product, steadfastly pursuing a different musical path and reaping the rewards.

"Uncle Son Tung's journey is a source of inspiration and motivation for me. Inspiration from my idol's success helps me persevere with my goals in both studying and life," Bich shared.

Listening to music and singing along to Son Tung's songs is also a way for female students to relax after school. The valedictorian of the 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City said that to have good spirit and energy for studying, one must balance between rest, entertainment and studying. Even during the most stressful exam preparation period, Bich still listens to music every day, occasionally sings karaoke at home, surfs social networks, and eats and sleeps on time. According to Bich, this is a way to support studying, not just "burying your head in" studying is good.

In the entrance exam to grade 10 of public schools, Ngoc Bich wished to enter the English specialized class and the non-specialized class of Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia High Schools for the Gifted. Because her specialized subject results were not good, she will choose to study in the non-specialized class of the school. The female student is not too concerned about this because, according to her, English ability can be improved throughout the learning process, it is not necessary to enter the specialized class.

"If my academic ability is not good enough and I am lucky enough to get accepted, I will still fail when I go to school," Bich said.

Math and Literature are not her strengths, so during the exam preparation process, Ngoc Bich has her own way of studying to conquer these two subjects. Instead of trying to solve many problems, she spends a lot of time reviewing and redoing the problems she did wrong or did not fully understand. From there, Bich has a firm grasp of the presentation and the steps to solve them.

For Literature, in addition to the knowledge in textbooks and in class, Bich looks for interesting lecture videos on Youtube. When watching, she does not put herself in a state of having to remember and memorize every word the teacher says, but only notes down some main ideas to absorb knowledge naturally.

"I like the creative teaching method, not following the stereotype in Literature. When doing exercises, I always incorporate my own opinions, viewpoints, and qualities," said a student at Le Anh Xuan Secondary School.

Talking more about her Literature exam, Bich said she wrote 9 pages of paper, choosing the work "Little Spring" to analyze about love for the homeland. In addition to the thematic analysis, she also related it to her desire to contribute and small things that can help society. Bich thinks this is the factor that helps the exam to be highly appreciated.

Ms. Tran Thi Hau, her homeroom teacher in grade 9, commented that Bich was a modest, careful and focused student. Initially, Bich's academic performance was not among the best in the class, but she strived and improved every day.

What impressed Ms. Hau about her student was the balance between studying and playing. "Bich is very serious and focused on studying but has a very relaxed attitude, does not put pressure on herself, and when the class has activities, she actively participates," said Ms. Hau.

Mr. To Vinh An, Vice Principal of Le Anh Xuan Secondary School, was impressed with Bich's way of teaching Literature, which does not follow standard or standard writing. Her Literature essays are highly appreciated by teachers for their creativity and unique thinking.

"She tried very hard after the setback in the school's English team. At that time, I encouraged her to try harder, and the results of the 10th grade entrance exam proved her ability," said Mr. An.

Bich said she has not yet determined her goals for the three years of high school, but she will definitely try her best. "This summer I plan to learn a new language and learn to play an instrument so I can relax and have fun after school," she shared.
