Engage the whole society to care for workers and laborers

Việt NamViệt Nam23/02/2024

The recent Tet care activities continued to receive the attention of the Party, the State, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the central and local departments, ministries and branches as well as the positive response of union members, workers and the whole society. Thanks to that, the awareness of Tet care activities of trade unions in society and the business community has changed positively.

The Union Journey - Spring 2024 brought more than 300,000 union members and workers back to their hometowns to celebrate Tet.
The Union Journey - Spring 2024 brings more than 300,000 union members and workers back to their hometowns to celebrate Tet.

According to reports from localities and units, on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2024, more than 10.5 million union members and workers benefited from the care activities of four levels of trade unions, with a total budget of more than 7,025 billion VND. Thus, compared to Tet 2023, the budget that trade unions spend on caring for union members and workers increased by 15%, of which the expenditure from trade union financial resources was 3,506 billion VND; calling for social support for the care fund was 3,519 billion VND, accounting for 50.1%.

It can be seen that 2023 is a particularly difficult year for the business community. However, the attention of trade unions, Party committees, and localities has encouraged most large enterprises to coordinate to organize Tet and Spring programs for workers.

The recent "Union Tet Journey - Spring 2024" program supported train, bus and plane tickets to bring nearly 300,000 union members and workers home for Tet and back to their businesses on time, with a total support amount of more than 106 billion VND, truly becoming a meaningful and practical activity, contributing to businesses stabilizing their workforce after Tet. According to the report of the Labor Relations Department (Vietnam General Confederation of Labor), on the first working day of the Year of the Dragon, February 15 (ie January 6), about 92% of businesses and workers returned to production and business.

The efforts and dedication of the trade union organization to take care of workers cannot be denied. However, it must also be recognized that some localities are still slow to implement care activities, and coordination is still awkward. The level of care currently applied is not suitable for many localities, although care activities have been renewed, the level is not high, the quantity is not large. The way to implement some new activities, the first time the organization is present is still awkward, the results have not been as expected. One of the reasons for the limitations is that the production and business situation of many enterprises has not yet fully recovered, affecting the mobilization of resources; the workload for taking care of Tet is very large, requiring simultaneous implementation, many activities are being implemented for the first time, while the force of trade union cadres is still thin, not to mention some trade union cadres are still "afraid" to implement new ways of doing things...

Returning to the first six months of 2023, the whole country has half a million workers and laborers whose jobs and incomes have been affected; among them, many workers are still facing many daily difficulties. What trade union organizations and union officials still care about and what many workers want is that taking care of the spiritual and material lives of workers and laborers does not only need to focus on Tet and Workers' Month. Therefore, in order to take better care of union members and laborers, we need more support, more participation, and more determination from the entire political system, party committees at all levels, the business community, and the whole society.

To do so, it is necessary to have a system of legal policies and a synchronous social security system from the central to local levels, from society to enterprises. In addition to representing workers in collective negotiations and signing collective labor agreements, trade unions need to pay more attention, advise and coordinate with local Party committees and authorities in participating in building a system of local legal policies to create a common ground for workers...
