2 poetry phenomena in HCMC
In the exchange program to launch the poetry collection Germany - Winter Fairy Tales (Phanbook and The Gioi Publishing House) held at Nam Thi House last weekend, what surprised many people was the large number of readers of different ages attending. The poetry collection includes 108 poems with many different topics by 17 typical authors who have influenced German literature, mainly composed from the 18th century to the mid-20th century. Although the price is up to 250,000 VND/poetry collection, almost everyone attending bought it.
As a young writer, young poet Trinh Nam Tran (born in 1992) said she was moved and surprised when attending the program to launch the poetry collection Germany - Winter Fairy Tale. In addition to the massiveness and meticulousness of the poetry collection, the program with the participation of translator Phan Kim Ho, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Xanh and researcher Bui Van Nam Son was a rare opportunity to receive knowledge about literature in general and poetry in particular.
“Before, when I was young, I thought I would live my life with my passion for poetry. But then, the pressures of life made me sometimes think of giving up on literature, or sometimes I felt too empty and pragmatic. It was sessions like this that reminded me why I started and that continuing to persevere is completely possible,” shared young poet Trinh Nam Tran.
Not long before, poet Nguyen Thien Ngan also made an impression with the poetry collection Nguoi la mot bong chinh tu (Phuc Hung Books and Literature Publishing House). The collection marked her return to the literary world after 7 years of absence. During the recent book signing at Ca Chep Bookstore, many readers lined up to ask for the author's autograph. What was special was that in addition to young readers, there were also many older readers attending.
Although The Lady is a Beautiful Bird's Shadow has a cover price of up to 385,000 VND, after only one week of publication, 3,000 copies were sold out, and the work is currently being reprinted. As someone who ordered the poetry collection early, journalist Trung Nghia said that this is a very positive phenomenon at the present time, when the domestic book industry is facing many difficulties, purchasing power is fluctuating and somewhat saturated.
“I think the book market really needs new boosts, new works with good value and purchasing power like Nguyen Thien Ngan’s poetry collection. Our lives always need poetry, diverse perspectives, and positive messages. Good poetry always receives recognition and sympathy from the community,” said journalist Trung Nghia.
Bringing poetry to the public
Starting this March, director Marcus Manh Cuong Vu will conduct a series of community art programs called Reading Poetry Together. The first program will introduce the poetry collection Time Eats Me with All Senses (Da Nang Publishing House) by author 8X Linh Van. At the program, readers and authors will share and discuss their first poetry collection under the guidance of director Marcus Manh Cuong Vu. “We organize this activity with the goal of bringing poetry and poets closer to readers, through direct interactive activities. All are aimed at creating a new environment for approaching poetry to explore contemporary poetic voices,” said director Marcus Manh Cuong Vu.
Although there are still people who think that “poetry is printed to give away”, in reality, poetry always has its own audience. The problem is how to create a connection between poetry and the audience, and be able to publish well like other publications. Journalist Trung Nghia believes that the success of The Lady is a Shadow of a Beautiful Bird is a synthesis of many factors.
In addition to being a spiritual product that is made with passion, meticulousness, and has its own style, the collection of poems also comes from a talented author, who writes consistently, and has a large number of readers who have loved her poems for a long time. “The most important point is that the poetry must be good, the author must be attentive, and be loved by many readers… In addition, the marketing, communication, promotion, and distribution must be appropriate to the times, closely linked to social networking platforms,” journalist Trung Nghia explained.
