Parents hug and encourage their children after completing the combined exam at Phu Nhuan High School (Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City)
"In my time, you guys worked hard to get into university."
Ms. On Thi Thu Thuy, a parent whose child is a 12th grader at Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) taking the high school graduation exam this year, said: "In my time, students had to work hard to get into university, and if they failed, they had to go to college and could not look back. Now there are many wishes, many schools, many directions, so there are also many choices. I see many students taking the high school graduation exam just to get above the failing score and graduate because they have been accepted before, so now it is too easy to get into university, anyone with good academic ability can get in. Unlike the 10th grade exam, they have to select and screen to classify good and fair students, so there is much more pressure."
Ms. Le Thi Hong Nhung (residing in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City), mother of twin brothers Nguyen Phuc Dang Khoi and Nguyen Phuc Dang Khoa, waiting for her children to finish the exam at Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School (District 6), also said that "The 10th grade exam is much more stressful!". Ms. Nhung explained that it was because the number of candidates was larger than the number of places in public schools. Not to mention, many candidates took the 2024 high school graduation exam just to qualify for early admission, so they were not as stressed.
"I sent my children to private schools from junior high school to high school so that teachers could closely monitor them. Before the exam, both of them also considered their transcripts for the economic law major at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, and their scores were relatively good, so this time the exam was just to increase their chances of being admitted to other wishes. Seeing my children continuously making efforts over the past 3 years, during these exam days, I did not put too much pressure on them to do well, just do their best," Ms. Nhung confided.
The most impressive moments of the 2024 high school graduation exam
During the past exam days, the female parent smiled and said that both brothers did well on the test, not much different from each other. "Seeing my children do well on the test is better than being successful myself. This whole month, my children's schedule was to go to school at 6:30 every day and finish at midnight. On the days before the exam, they would stay until 2-3 am. Now I feel relieved," Ms. Nhung breathed a sigh of relief.
"Even though my house is near the school, I still sit here waiting because I'm worried when I get home and can't do anything. Partly because if something happens, it's easier to solve it when I'm right there. And with parents on duty, not only me but also my friends feel secure," the female parent added.

Teach children lessons in being human
Ms. On Thi Thu Thuy said she never pressures her children to try to do this or that, because "we cannot force this generation". "The important thing is to guide them in life experiences and how to behave. I always tell them that they can live however they want, but they must live according to their conscience and not do anything dishonest or wrong," Ms. Thuy said.
"Each generation has different thoughts, so I just share what I have experienced, so that my child can analyze what should and should not be done according to the way of thinking of his generation. As long as I create conditions for my child to do what he likes, he will have the motivation to do it. If I force him, he will get discouraged, because it is not his will. So I also teach my child to have his own opinion and know how to defend it," the female parent added.
As for studying, Ms. Thuy only advises her child to study as much as possible and take exams as needed. "He is the third child in the family and wants to take the exam for business administration."
Parents wait for their children at the exam site of Le Loi Secondary School (District 3) after finishing the 2024 high school graduation exam in math.
Ms. Do Thi Oanh, living in District 10, said that all parents have the same mentality, which is to want to accompany their children at every important moment no matter how busy they are, so that their children can rest assured knowing that their family is always there. "I hope all of my children will have the best results after 12 years of studying," the female parent said.
After the 2024 high school graduation exam ends, the exam results are expected to be announced on July 17 and candidates can register and adjust their university admission wishes an unlimited number of times on the Ministry of Education and Training's common system from July 18 to 30. Before 5:00 p.m. on July 22, universities will announce the admission score on the common system and the school's own website.
