“Haunting, breathtaking, watching to understand the value of peace”, that is the common feeling of many Bac Lieu audiences when it can be said that it is the first time going to the cinema to watch a film about revolutionary war. “Tunnels - Sun in the dark” by director Bui Thac Chuyen is creating a fever in Vietnamese cinemas in recent days.
Light in the darkness
“In the midst of the darkness of the earth, there are still people who bring the sun to light up. A film that not only tells the story of war but also evokes humanity, faith and a strong desire to live in the fierce days of war. Proud and grateful to the children of the “steel and copper land”, Ms. Tinh - a Bac Lieu audience who came to the first screening of this film emotionally expressed.
Revolving around the fight of the 21-man Guerrilla Team led by comrade Bay Theo at Binh An Dong base (Cu Chi) - the number one search and destroy target of the US army at that time - it recreated so hauntingly realistically the war that the Vietnamese army and people once had to go through!
The scorched treetops, the forests that no longer have any green color due to American bombs dropped day and night, the deafening sound of bombs, the narrow tunnels that are tunnels - the living and fighting places of many young people with heroic blood in their veins; the climax is when the enemy attacks to destroy, level the tunnels by all means, the young heroes fight for their lives between the fragile line of death, the extremely painful deaths, scorched by bombs... All create breathtaking footage that truly haunts the viewers! But after all is the Sun - the light in the darkness, as the name of the film suggests.
That light is the shining truth of the revolution, the heroic blood of the heroic sons of the Fatherland, the love that still blossoms amidst the storm of bullets and bombs, "asking to shoot a tank once", "to sleep with a gun" and to die with the enemy regardless of sacrifice...
Light in the dark, the sun in the tunnels with those footages have created unprecedented things for the revolutionary war film genre! As the first feature film about the revolutionary war without using the state budget; the film project was "incubated" for more than 11 years, director Bui Thac Chuyen and the film crew have created proud miracles! According to the distributor, this "war blockbuster" film has reached 60,000 tickets sold before the film's official release date, something that has never happened with historical films before. It was scheduled to be released in theaters on April 4, but due to falling on 2 days of National Mourning, theaters had to close, until April 6 it was officially released widely, according to statistics on April 6 alone, the film had more than 5,000 screenings!

Proud and grateful
The film recreates the heroic and tragic days of struggle in Cu Chi Tunnels during the resistance war against the US to save the country. It is the realistic recreation of the hidden corners of history and the resilient spirit of the Vietnamese people that has created the phenomenon of blockbusters for Vietnamese war films! The images of faces blackened by mud, smoke from bombs and bullets, the tragic deaths with the strong will and the most ordinary, most ordinary desires of the young men and women at that time... have made all of us - people living in peace today - think more deeply about the word "sacrifice" of those people yesterday!
The acting of actors Thai Hoa, Quang Tuan, Meritorious Artist Cao Minh, Ho Thu Anh... brought the most realistic image of the Cu Chi guerrillas of the past. The minutes of intense fighting with extremely strong sound effects took the audience from suspense to breathlessness, showing the unequal battle between the US army with heavy weapons on one side and the Cu Chi guerrillas "barefoot and steel-willed" fighting with an indomitable spirit on the other, making us all the more proud and grateful!
Here is an insightful quote for the film: “Not every war film can convey the depth and humanistic values like Tunnels. This is not only a work for the Vietnamese people, but also deserves to be released worldwide so that international audiences can better understand the history, courage and indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people. If well invested in and promoted, Tunnels can absolutely become a memorable mark on the world cinema map.”
“Tunnels - Sun in the Dark” continues to attract audiences to the cinema at an unprecedented ticket sales rate, both by the value of the film and the viral effect of the audience who have seen it. The explosion of the audience also opens up new hope for cinema on the theme of revolutionary war. What is truly special is that the number of young audiences coming to the film is unprecedented, and the CGV Vincom Bac Lieu cinema is also welcoming this young audience like a phenomenon!
As the main film work aiming to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), the film makes people understand more about the value of the word "peace". There are scenes that make the audience burst into tears! Feeling the fierceness of war, the value of peace so that later, when standing under the monuments of heroic martyrs, we can take a moment of silence in the most solemn way to express our gratitude to the sacrifices...
